A tasty, complex beer with malt and hops throughout and a long, satisfying bitter finish. Well worthy of the title ’Champion Beer of Britain’ award 1997.

Cask at the Eastbourne Beer Festival, 11th Oct 2008. Deep chestnut colour with a strange mix of malt & hop aromas. Nice toffee sweetness and fruit on the tongue but feels a bit unbalanced.

Cask at the Roebuck, Nottingham. This is a copper beer with a fairly faint roast aroma. The flavour is much more powerful with lots of malt and some smokiness with a lingeringly bitter finish.

UPDATED: FEB 24, 2013 Cask conditioned - handpump - Vat & Fiddle, Nottingham. An amber coloured beer with a whitish head. The aroma is pretty heavy on the fruits with hints of toffee. The taste is really malty with more berry fruits. For all that it’s pretty tasty and quite smooth. This isn’t how I remember this beer from six or seven years ago, but it’s still nice enough. Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. Cloudy copper with a creamy white head; bry and herbal to start the developing a malty orange sweetness; nutty and warming finish. Hard to see why this would be a Champion Beer.

Bottle from Party Town, KY. Poured clear dark copper color with an average white head that diminished slowly with good lacing. Moderate sweet malty aroma. Medium body with a dry bitter texture. Medium sweet bitter flavor with a smoot toasted bitter finish of average duration. Solid drinkable flavorful brew.

RPillsbury (115) - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, ENGLAND - MAR 27, 2008
Cask at the Bridge Hotel, Newcastle. A really great beer with a nice, well-balanced range of aromas and flavours. The aroma is a blend of malt, plum and some caramel. The flavour starts with bold, but smooth, roasted malts then combining with dark fruits like plum and blackcurrent and finally finishing off with a lovely bitterness. The pub added to the enjoyment with a selection of interesting books and a wonderful view of the Tyne bridge. Excellent.

UPDATED: NOV 28, 2008 From cask at Charlies. Pours golden deep orange towards brown with a lasting dense off-white head. Light caramel malty aroma. Flavour is solid caramel malt with a slight spice note and sadly also butterish. Very very smooth liqourice note towards the finish. Mild bitterness in the finish.

From cask. Pours clear and golnde deep orange with a small yet dense creamy off-white head. Mild fruity hops aroma. Sweet to citric flavour with a distinct hops profile and acidic finish showing a solid bitterness coming through to the finish. Smooth yet not without a bite.
