A tasty, complex beer with malt and hops throughout and a long, satisfying bitter finish. Well worthy of the title ’Champion Beer of Britain’ award 1997.

Cask at the Stanley Arms outside of Ormskirk, malt on the nose and then more malt in the mouth, pretty one dimensional but not too bad for it, nice translucent red in colour, good lasting head and a solid finish, carries the 4.5% well

500ml bottle from Beer Hawk - Ruby red body, white frothy head. Nose is heavy on the malt, some yeastiness there, think brown bread, sweet dough. Taste has a relative sweetness to it, in a dark sugar kind of way, with a bitterness at the end. Not bad, but the palate leaves me thinking something’s missing. Substance.

A sweet Old Ale with a very dark copper appearance and next to no head. Has a sticky aftertaste.

Cask@moonunderwater, wolverhampton. Mahogany beer with large firm head. Looks excellent. Mild malt aroma. Taste is a good balance between hops and malt producing a bitter finish. Medium bodied and slightly creamy. An excellent beer.

500ml bottle. Clear dark brown amber colour, white head with malty caramel type aroma. Malty with alittle bitterness followed by caramel, biscuit, earthy notes and remaining slighty sweetish leaving a lingering light dry bitterness. OK.

Cask at the Cleveland Arms, London. Pours clear, amber-gold with a fine, frothy white head. Aroma holds brown bread, light brown sugar and light caramel. Lovely flavor, lightly sweet, with some dry and toasty brown sugar, rich brown bread, subtle caramel sweetness, mild leafy and earthy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Near perfect condition. Very clean finish, toasty brown bread, modest hints of cocoa and brown sugar, dry leafy bitterness. Stupidly drinkable. Superlative ESB. For this style of beer, it really doesn’t get much better.

Handpull at The White Horse on Parsons Green. Clear fairly deep copper-red with a smallosh creamy beige head. Lightly toasted sweet cereal, maybe a hint of celery, some sweet yeast. Taste follows - add grape and grapeseed bitterness, a little alcohol presence. Slick, lightly carbonated, a bit stringent and only mildly carbonated - finish is quite bitter, I keep thinking I chomped a ripe grape and chewed the seeds too.

Cask @ The White Horse on Parsons Green. Pours deep ruby brown with a small off-white head. The nose is soft caramel, nuts, tree bark and malty cherry sweetness. The taste is dried leather, toasted grain, umami. Some christmas spice, pepper, caramel and nutmeg. Full, rich. A bit woody. Definitely a cold weather beer. Fairly flavorful.

Pours clear brown with a small off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, some sort of berries and floral hops. Taste is meidum sweet, light bitter with a hint of sourness. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is flat to soft.

Bottle. Pours a rich mahogany with a small off-white head. Tons of aroma, roasted caramel, some slight nuts, maltiness, some fruitness (plum, raisin). In the mouth and there’s stewed fruits, caramel, dusting of icing sugar, malt. There’s some bitter, sour notes in there too. The finish hits bitter and hangs around getting sweeter. Really nice!
