This light flavored black lager is our version of a classic schwarzbier. This schwarzbier has moderate malt flavors that finish clean and sweet, and are balanced out nicely with just a hint of bitterness. The appearance is very dark brown, with a tan-colored head. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium to medium-high carbonation. Black Bear is truly a beer that will surprise the drinker. It is overall dark, but very pleasantly sweet with no harshness that most would expect from a dark beer. This beer is available seasonally, so try it when you can.

12 oz. can via in-person STL trade. Pours a deep cola brown with a small beige head. Really nice aroma of pepper, leaves, toast, roast, chocolate, and nuts. Wow. Didn’t expect it to pop that much. The flavor, however, drops off and is much more muted- spice, leaves, nuts, earth, and some dark soda, maybe a mild root beer or cola. Light-bodied, with medium carbonation and a dry, earthy, toasty mouthfeel. Good schwarzbier that could be awesome if the rest of it matched the nose.

This beer pours an opaque dark brown color with a large cream-colored head, and the aroma is a pure malt goodness with a subtle mixtue of roasted malts and a hint of a vanilla-esque sweetness. The taste has a solid amout of umami to it, but there isnt too much balance between this nice flavor and the only other facet of the taste: a slight amout of sourness. The mouthfeel, however, has a lightness of body and thinness of texture that doesn’t quite mesh with the flavor, but the long malty finish and soft carbonation do redeem the beer slightly.

Draught at the Morgan Street Brewery, St Louis, MO.
Dark reddish brown almost black colour with a tiny creamy tan head. Toasted malt, mild coffee and mild sweetness in the aroma. The flavour is mildly roasted malt, mild hoppy bitterness, mild coffee and dryness. Rather tasty actually. Smooth. Soft carbonation. A nice surprise.

Sampled on tap at Morgan Street. Pours a deep brown color with white head. Light, sweet, malty aromas. Roasty, tramp stamp, light dark lager flavors. Pretty meh for a schwarzbier.

12oz can poured into a Willibecker Free State glass. I think its pretty fresh, I think this brewery only recently started canning. Very dark brown almost black body topped with a medium sized khaki head. The head has pretty good retention, sticks around for a good deal of time. Its a good looking brew. Aroma starts with a dark malt sweetness soon followed by a very clean lager mineral character and all surrounded by the slightest roast character. Its clean, sweet but well lagered and seems to compromise all the important aspects of the style. Right on the money, I could smell this all day. Flavor is more of a completely clean lager with no off flavors in the meat of the flavor. Just clean, slightly mineral in a good way. Might be boring if it wasn’t for the aftertaste. It finishes with that nice sweetness from the aroma that lingers a good bit. No hops to speak off, perfect. Clean, light-medium body, a light carbonation tingles the cheeks. Magnificent.

Pour is a dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma is a decent roast and chocolate malt combo. Flavor is about the same. Nice roasted malt with a little cocoa left too linger on the tounge. Probably the most cocoa I’ve picked up in a swartz. Its not there in a big way but just there enough to compliment the roasted malt. Decent.
