Aroma is heavy malt (bread, cookie, chocolate, toasted), light hops (earthy), and light esters (dried fruit) with notes of dates. Flavor is heavy malt (bread, cookie, chocolate, toasted), light hops (earthy), and light esters (dried fruit) with notes of honey. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation, low creaminess with medium sweet finish.

Draft… Clear, deep, dark copper ale with a mid-sized, creamy, off-white head. Fantastic retention. The restrained bouquet is quite nutty without much else going on. Medium-bodied and lightly creamy with soft carbonation. The roasty flavor leans a smidge toward the bitter side, but is smooth and well-balanced overall. A bit nutty and a touch thin. Finishes crisp and very mildly bitter. A little too crisp and refreshing for the style. Personally, I like a little meat on my brown ale’s bones.

Drake (7944) - Free Union, Virginia, USA - AUG 18, 2011
Served on draft at the brewpub. Pours a dark brown color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel, toasted malts, nuts and a faintly hoppy finish. The taste is very tart with notes of berries, citrus and nutty notes. Medium bodied. Seems like something might be wrong with this one.

On tap at Morgantown Brewing Company on 10 March 2010. Attractive clear chestnut colour with a red tinge. Quite smoky aroma. Some nutty notes. Slight odd medicinal TCP notes in the flavour. Otherwise OK.

Lighter to medium cola brown. Milder aroma. Nutty flavor, light chocolate notes in finish. Light mouthfeel. Could use a bit more body, decent flavor.

UPDATED: SEP 5, 2012 Sampled on draft at the brewery this beer poured a moderately dark brown color with faint red highlights and a small tan head. The aroma was faint dry and roasty malts. The flavor was dry, roasty and nutty with touches of wood and apple. The finish was medium length dry malts. A bit thin in body. Eh.

Draft at brewpub. Pours dark brown with an inch of khaki foam. A couple of nutty notes on the nose. There’s nuttiness on the tongue but it seems to fade as the beer opens up. Finishes clean.
