4.1 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 BlackIPA (749) - Rochester, New York, USA - SEP 15, 2012
Brittle via trade with Canada. Pours a very murky and quite dark orange with a huge head that is as pure as the driven snow. The first sniff reveals a onslaught of funk, barnyard and urinary tract infections. Hidden in there I also detect a whiff of crotch cheese and dirty old man. Awesome. The first sip hits with a sharp acidity. Bacterial, primordial. Cheese. Very high carbonation level. Well, the aroma promised a phenomenal beer, but honestly, the taste let me down quite a bit. This is pretty one dimensional, with the sharp acid playing the starring role and the funk is only a $50 a day extra. Decent, good, drinkable but not mind blowing. This is on par with cuvée de champions, or perhaps just a step behind. Nowhere near 3F or Hanssens.

Bottle from Secret Santa, thanks! Pours a hazy orange with straw white head that is rather full. Aroma is mild barnyard with some sweet notes. The taste is middle of the road with some citrus notes such as unripe orange and some more funk but very mild sour. Overall, nice gueuze but nothing I’d likely seek out again.
