Amber-to-brown colour, fine tight head. Fresh spicy malty aroma, very yeasty, Belgian style palate with complex maltiness and bitterness. Hints of alcohol as well.

And amber-red color with an impressive tan head that lingered for a while. There was more malt than hop in the aroma and a "pilsner amount" of carbonation. The taste was full and malty and the alcohol apparent. Unfortunately, it left a tinny taste in the mouth.

brownish amber a decent size head that dissipates to very little. smell is slight skunk along with metalic. taste is highly carbonated and metalic again. some light fruityness with a slightly biter dry finish. the carbonation was distracting from the flavor. not bad. nothing special though

Nice amber brown color, small off white head that had a short hang time then faded to a very slight lace.Malty aroma with some hops a bit of yeast and maybe even a touch of caramel in there but it’s very faint.Kind of sweet and cerealish upfront with a light malt coming on just shortly after that. The hops come through nicely in the flavor as well as a faint hint of alcohol but to mild to be big deal.Slight mild bitter finish with a slight hoppy malty after taste. Not bad for the style fairly smooth and easy to drink but not a brew i’d be interested in getting more then once.

Bottle conditioned, 500ml bottle. Super beer, slightly hoppy flavour. Good long-lasting head. Characteristic Greene King yeast.

Nov. 2002: Fresh, deep, deep malt, dry and dark. A splendid beer. Because the name invites comparison: better than Old Speckled Hen in the (non conditioned) bottle, but not quite as good as the Hen in the cask. [3.2]
July 2002: A taste comparison with <a href=Beer-Ratings.asp?BeerID=140&FanOfID=4383>Y London and <a href=Beer-Ratings.asp?BeerID=294&FanOfID=4383>F 1845 . Greene King, Fuller’s and Young’s are three big breweries who make beers carefully and rarely experiment or bottle condition - in the case of Greene King this is their only bottle conditioned beer.
All three beers are made to a very high standard with quality ingredients - traditional English pale malts and English hops. As far as overall quality goes there is nothing to separate them, and they can stand next to some Belgian ales, such as Orval, as excellent examples of the brewer’s craft.
The clear glass bottle may dismay some American drinkers because of the storage and display problems over there, but correctly stored this beer is on a par with Fuller’s and Orval.
Taste differences are simply down to differences in choice of hops and malt - so preference for one beer over another will be based purely on individual preference for Challenger over Fuggles or Pipkin over Maris Otter, or Morland’s yeast over Fuller’s yeast, etc.
The Pipkin malt is more mellow than its father Maris Otter. And as this is the 2 row English rather than American Pipkin, it is quite full with a noticeable malty flavour. There is some toffee from the crystal malt, and floral notes from the Goldings hops which also reveal violets.
The carbonation in the Hens Tooth was the most noticeable of all three bottles, but like the others this settled down after the beer had been allowed to condition over night in the fridge and then warmed back up to drinking temperature.
Overall the Hen’s Tooth sits midway between the fruity lightness of the London and the dark mustiness of the 1845. [3.5]

Bottled. Copper coloured with an almond head, dry malts with a rough bitterness that makes this more enjoyable than some of it’s stablemates (or should that be coop-mates?)
