Pours deep orange/amber with silky/creamy head. Head stays with the drink and coats the glass. Taste of toffee with some bitterness. Some of the oak barrel comes through in the flavor. Different from the usual English bitter....

No aroma whatsoever. Color is a amber, hazy, oily white head. Flavor is strong corn, tin foil, and malt. Only aftertaste is tin foil. This tastes like it is bordering on a malt liquor. Hoped for something more subtle, like the speckled hen.

A clear brown body with a nice off-white head that had nice retention and some lace. A nice grassy hop profile dominated the aroma malts had a hay quality to it, but there was some caramel malts to it. Flavor had good balance between hops and malts. Caramel malts were a little more present then aroma indicated but took a back seat to nice hay flavors. Hops were delicately bitter with some grass notes. A slight fruit note in the finish. Slightly dry.

Pours a beautiful, dark copper/red colour with a very thin off white head that quickly dissipates, though this is probably because of the dishwasher tablets. Smell of malts, very slight fruity smell. Lovely, rich malty taste with some notes of biscuit and dark fruits. Has a bitter finish which lasts, very smooth to drink. Much, much better than Old Speckled Hen and Old Golden Hen, a pleasant surprise! Fuller’s 1845 is better though.

Bottle courtesy of Tesco. Dark copper pour with a thin white frothy head. A malty aroma and a lovely malty smooth flavour with a hint of bitterness which lingers for a while on the palate. A big step up from Speckled Hen and a beer that is loved by everyone that tastes it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I was a little scared by the clear bottle but the price was right so I took a flyer. Pours a super clear auburn color. Good amount of sparkle on the tongue. Has the typical apple cider taste with some malts backing it up. But I would like to have gotten a bit more of the Old 5X in this beer. Maybe amp that up to 25 or 30%.

THOUGHTS: Damn clear bottle. Slightly skunked, mostly in the aroma. Naturally, very British. Beautiful bottle and label. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, light amber with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished. The aroma had moderate grain, caramel and cake; light to moderate herbal and earthy hops; grape; raisin; maple syrup; slight vanilla; slight skunk; cardboard and paper. The initial flavor was moderately sweet, slightly acidic and lightly bitter; while the finish was moderate to heavily sweet, light to moderately bitter and slightly sour. There was caramel, maple syrup, malt in general, cookies, vanilla, raisin, grape, prune, dark cherry, and earthy and herbal hops. The medium body was rather oily, slightly syrupy and then dry with fizzy then soft carbonation and dry, slightly metallic, lightly astringent and , surprising for the lower ABV, slightly alcoholic finish.

Deep ruby color with thin head. Tons of toasted, caramel and dark fruit aromas. Taste is similar with a rich maltiness and a strong raisin finish
