imdownthepub (10141) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - APR 11, 2010
Bottled, pasteurised, 500ml from Tesco, Banbury. Deep Orange Amber with white head. Rich malty flavours initially, with a molasses grainy effect, burnt and mouthcoating, then an unfortunate pasteurisation, cardboardy note followed by a fruity, sugary finish. Shame about the middle part as it was proving to be a very decent beer.

Bottle: Clear, chestnut-amber coloured, lacy medium-sized off-white head; raisins, dark toasty malt and solid hops in the nose; moderate to solid bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied as expected; slightly lingering drier fruity and hoppy finish, accompanied by a little tartness and delicate traces of alcohol. Robust thirst-quencher......

Bottled A mid brown coloured beer with a red hue and no head. An interesting experiment drinking this the night after Abbot Reserve. They are similar but not the same. This is less good altho shares a lot of attributes, not least the toffee and fruity notes. Again good depth and warmth, but just a bit harsher in the mouth. It’s still very drinkable though.

(bottle, vintage 2009) Clear, amber to copper colour with a mid-sized and slightly tanned foamy head. Mildly toasted malty aroma with rich caramelly notes, accompanied by shades of citrus, liquorice, an oaky vanilla touch and alcohol. Moderately sweet and slightly bitter flavour, medium to full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Caramel-malty, subtle fruity taste with liquorice-spice and slightly oaky/woody accents; sweet and slightly bitter malt-accented and slightly spicy finish with an almost warming alcoholic note. Has some drinkability for sure. 03.IX.10
