Crafted by the master brewer of Old Speckled Hen, this hoppy pale ale is bursting with flavour and aroma. It is brewed with the finest pale and crystal malts as well as the American Chinook hop to give a fresh grapefruit hop character. The addition of rye malt adds a touch of spiciness. Old Hoppy Hen is perfect for all occasions and best enjoyed chilled with friends.

500ml Bottle. It pours a dark golden body topped with what is at first quite a dense head but it soon goes leaving thin lacing. Its aroma is not exactly "bursting" but there is malts and a hint of grapefruit. Its taste is full of malts and the hop inspired grapefruit but theres is also a spiciness and subtle hints of dark chocolate ending in a dry bitter finish. One of Greene Kings better beers but not a top 10 beer.

50cl bottle from Tesco, Wokingham. Amber with a thin white head; grassy hop aroma with some muted tropical fruit; rather thin and unbalanced - there are defintely some hops in there, but they donít marry well with the sweet caramel of the malts; the finish has some spicy hopr and then lingering sweet biscuit. GK have produced some decent beers recently - but this isnít one of them.

Bottle from Tesco. Poured a clear medium amber with a bubbly white head. The aroma is tropical fruit grassy hop. The flavour is medium bitter with a smooth, hoppy light bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. A nice fruity hop summer ale.

From Stinckley TossCo. Clear bronze with a cream head dropping fast. Buttered GK nose with lurking orange peel hops, nougat touches and something spirit like- Triple Sec. Well cooked boiled sweet orange hop taints, the vestiges of something once decent, a light stew of nettle, more butter, then digestive biscuit and oak mush. Strangely better than expected. It does admittedly taste more of hops than bog standard Hen. As if thatís any recommendation.

Clear 500ml Bottle: BBD Apr 2015. Poured into an íOld Speckled Hení badged pint vase at home after a spot of gardening on 6th June 2014. Looked OK, amber and bright with an off-white, lasting head. I couldnít take to the beer though: something amiss. Strange toffee and mini citrus aroma didnít marry together very well and the taste continued in the same way. A metallic twang didnít help. Greene King do produce some fine beers, this however is not one of them.

Bottle from Tesco Extra, Aylesbury, Bucks, Tuesday 3rd June 2014 consumed the same day. Pours orangey/gold, clear as yerí like with a white head. A little boiled sweet, orange and sweet malt, a touch hoppy but not particularly so. I donít dislike this, however it does have that typical GK flavour throughout which does lose it a mark. 500ml bottle from local supermarket. Golden brown with a thin head. Aroma hasnít got a lot of hops, the taste doesnít have them either. Not sure why itís called Hoppy, unless the old hen they refer to had only one leg.
