Golden to caramel color with a smallish head. Sweet, caramel aroma with no real hop notes. Sweet and bready malt flavors and somewhat buttery with no hop notes. Seemed light in body. Neutral finish.

What a pleasant surprise! I have seen this beer for hundreds of years and always thought of it as a limey concoction for the less fortunate ... it turn out that this is somewhat tasty. Dark copper colour with a almond head. Beautiful bitter finish ends SO smooth.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A very distinctive flavor that can be quite dry and not overtly malty or hoppy. Appealing and very drinkable, but not something I’d want all the time. The main drawback was the mineral taste.

Not really all that bad, I was expecting worse. Malty and sweet. Quickly vanishing head. Still nice thought.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Can (with widget) version. Sweet, yet subtle, light hop aroma. Wonderful appearance with a huge creamy head that did not disappate at all and left excellent lace. Orange in body, Old Speckled Hen falls a little short in the taste department. Very dry and subtle in taste; no bitterness to speak of. Without the splendid appearance, this would be an average beer.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a clear copper color with a medium sized, lasting white head. Light aroma of hops and malts with a slight smokiness underneath. Medium body and light malty flavor, with a mildly sweet finish. Some off flavors exist, mainly a mild skunkiness in the aroma and taste. Not bad, but not as good as my favorite English Pale Ale by Samuel Smith.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Had from bottle, not impressive beer seems thin and lacking the balanced sweetness in the description. Hop flavor does save the beer from being a total waste, but wouldn’t reccomend

UPDATED: OCT 26, 2007 Better in the bottle than the can -- the N2 widgetcan is a poor shadow of what this beer is all about when charged with C02. On tap, it has a definite banana tinge. Building bitter and buttery ale palate. Peaty caste. Bottle has a candied aspect, nitro can definitely does not. One of my favorites, this is a fine example of a British ale. Minor grumbles about the clear bottle, which is otherwise shaped nicely. Cool label, cool name. Rerate 12/21/02: Funny thing was that the numbers didn’t change at all, just the description.
