Smooth and refreshing. Reminded me of a cross between Belhaven and New Castle Brown Ale. Caramel in color with a clear bubbly whilte head. Slightly sweet and malty. Nuts and caramel taste. Good palate with a smooth finish.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Very malty nose, copper, with a medium sized vanilla head. Sweet malt, hops and fruit(apple?) flavours, caramel, nutty, woody too. Fine bitterness, a good example.

From other Rater's reviews, I am not hearing any mention of the distinctive smoke-like (sardine?) flavor. Reminds me somewhat of Franz Joseph Sailer's Rauchenfelser Steinbrau, a stone-smoked brew. The stone-smoke I taste may actually be the "leather tankard" the bottle mentions it is stored in. Regardless, regarding this distinctive quality, I can take it or leave it. It has a nice medium bitter zing...remember folks, English bitters are nowhere near as bitter as American Ales. Hazy amber body. Frothy, off-white head; mostly dissipating. Good lace. Tastes stronger than 4.4% ABV. Not bad.

Orange tinted Amber colour...quick dissolving off-white head. Aroma is fairly skunky. Slightly acidic taste with odd-flavours. Not a great beer, but not a bad beer!

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Hazy amber with creamy small light-tan head. Aroma is both floral and nutty. Taste is floral, peppery, underlying toasty maltiness, with some wood. Finishes wood and caramel. Nice beer.

A very expensive beer. I could taste caramel sweetness, but the hops was lost to me. It wasn't a bad beer, but expected more from such a pricy brew.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Faintly hazy medium amber-orange colour under a smallish lasting yellow white head. Light woody malty and fainter floral spicey pepper aroma. Medium dry body. Cornflakey malt flavoured start. Medium oak and more malt in the middle with an added touch of caramel sweetness in the finish and aftertaste.

Iím rather amazed that many raters mention hops in connection with this one. My sample was butterscotch and caramel malt with no real defining characteristics. Terribly disappointing, given the great work this brewery did with Old Speckled Hen. Far too expensive, as well.
