johndoughty (2150), cheslyn hay, West Midlands, England May 10, 2009 Bottle. Brown and came in a clear bottle. Lots of maltiness and a nutty aroma. Medium body but not enough presence to be a wiinterale, which it claims to be. Still quite reasonable. DruncanVeasey (2690), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England Mar 17, 2009 Displeasing copper penny and long-dead boiled hop/vegetable aroma with some reasonable nutty and jellied red fruit and orange notes wriggling out as it warms. Quite full and creamy considering it’s filtered; deep chestnut with a fleetingly dimpled ivory head. Not unpleasantly woodsy nut bitterness, vanilla, peanut. Lingers quite astringently like chewed pencil. Rabbit hutch and sprouty fumes kicking in; herbal hop traces. Overall: better than expected.
Fin (3382), Merton, Oxfordshire, England Mar 2, 2009 Bottle picked up in Morrisons, Tewksbury, 01-03-09 and consumed the same day Pours brown with an off white head. Aroma is quite sweet, artificially so. Tastes too sweet and yes maybe it is nutty but syrupy as well, tastes pasteursied too me, not impressed. A4 A4 F3 P2 OV7 2.0 Gethinbeer (993), Nova Scotia, Canada Feb 22, 2009 From bottle. Aroma of sweet chestnuts. Nutty. Deep brown colour with a thin white head. Simple but very good bitter ale. Well balanced texture. Good session beer. scotty (828), Scotland Feb 11, 2009 I’ve never tasted chestnuts so I wouldn’t know if this is chestnutty or not! I liked it tho! Good roast malt flavours with a slightly spicy finish. Good effort I thought! HarryFlashman (469), Chatham, Kent, England Jan 20, 2009 This wasn’t too pleasant - looked the part, with a rich mahogany colour, but the flavours were much too strong - ridiculously overly nutty. imdownthepub (5089), Banbury, Oxfordshire, England Jan 8, 2009 Bottled, pasteurised, 500ml from Morrisons, Banbury. Chestnut brown with short white head. Absolutely over the top flavours, not necessarily quite what was expected, there is a big vegetal boiled character, sprouts, with a sweet nutty flavour and burnt sugar interlaced. Heavy and dominating. Not one to go back to. Beth101 (315), West Yorkshire, England Dec 26, 2008 Dark mahogany/ chestnut colour. Smells of smokey toffee/coffee. Slightly fizzy. Tastes of hops and malt with a smokey aftertaste.
