Draft, 2012 vintage. Aroma is super smooth bourbon and roasted malt. Apearance is perfect, what you’d expect of a stout. Taste... Graded this one down because it surprised me with the coffee flavors. Yes coffee is an ingredient but it overpowers this year’s vintage. Past versions had much lighter coffee flavors. Palate is rich, creamy, delightful. Overall a strong BA imperial stout.

Draft at Snallygaster 2014. Poured a dark, pitch black color with a small tan head. Aroma was caramel, booze, roasted malts and coffee. Flavor was nice bitter coffee notes, boozy bourbon, with vanilla and some woody barrel notes. Thick.

Silent Night, 2013 Vintage
Tasted from a corked and caged 750mL bottle at one of the late night tastings at RBWG Asheville. Pours opaque dark brown with a thin brown head that leaves a thin collar of lace. The nose is fresh coffee grounds, dark chocolate brownie, and plenty of toffee and caramel bourbon. The flavor is a bit more sweet bourbon influenced with the same coffee grounds and dark chocolate, and just a hint of vanilla oak. The body is full with light carbonation and a long, sweet bourbon and coffee finish.

February 21, 2014 - bottle via trade. Dark pour with nice amount of head and lacing. Aroma was an odd coffee and roasted malt with the bourbon coming out as it warmed. Taste was a cheap coffee, roasted malt and mild bourbon.

Bottle at the RBWG 2014 grand tasting, thanks! Pours a cloudy dark brown with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has lots of roasted malts with notes of dark fruits and dark grains. Flavor has bitter roasted malts with dark grains, dark chocolate and a hint of dark fruit.

Bottle shared late night RBWG. Pours oily black-brown with a bubbly tan head. Good stuff, slightly inky, some good chocolate, earthy bitterness. Brownies. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish, more chocolate, rich bread. Nice.

bomber bottle pours black with a decent head. Moderate barrel aging effect in the aroma, but a bit stronger than I prefer on the tongue. Lightly sweet until the finish whereafter bitterness from the hops and burnt grains comes out. Full, near chewy body.

UPDATED: JUL 17, 2014 Bottle: Thanks, Mike! Shades of dark mahogany with lighter hints of rustic brown at the edges; a slightly chunky, khaki ring forms from the foamy head after just a few moments. Aroma shows plenty of barrel aging notes; wet, oak-y bourbon, tannins, milk chocolate, faint licorice, & mild earthy finish. Not getting much coffee (this does have coffee, right?). Taste is also bourbon barrel forward in presence, but it’s far from "hot". Lots of oak, tannin, vanillin, & even hints of coconut from the barrel. Underneath lies layers of caramelized brown sugar with boozy licorice & timid cocoa in the aftertaste. It’s a little thin on the palate for an imperial stout, but not too much harm done. Wasn’t expecting much from this, but it turned out to actually be alright.

Had on tap at Zillies. Pours a jet black with a nice caramel head that sticks around. Served a bit cold but in a snifter so temperature can be fixed by patience. This is a big beer- tons of alcohol and all the right stout flavours happening. As full a mouthfeel as one would expect, Definitely sweet but the bourbon is done perfectly. Any more would have been like drinking a bourbon, and not a beer. Alcohol is definitely noticeable, but not necessarily too much on the palate. Well balanced and unapologetic- qualities I look for in my favorite brews.
