COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Steeped in a long history dating back hundreds of years, this "old-fashioned" beer is again in vogue. Lager is the German word meaning "to store," so this beer ages three times longer than our ales do. "Dunkel" means dark in German, but don’t let the color fool you, it is by no means heavy, overbearing, or bitter. In fact, it proves to be a very drinkable session beer.

grownfool’s Impromptu Tasting. Sample from a bottle shared by me. Clear brown-red, off white cover. Light toast, caramel aroma. Taste is light toasty, dry, caramel, candy.

Poured from my home tap with a deep dark chestnut brown color and a luxuriously creamy beige head. The aroma is clean and mild but nondescript, with only a toasted grain character being easily identifiable. The flavor seems more roasted rather than merely toasted, with some dry-roasted nuttiness, and a bit of semisweet chocolate. The texture is very creamy with only a very fine carbonation giving it any energy

From the 12th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering on 09/18/2010. Poured a hazy light brown faint head. Hazelnut aroma. Taste has quite a bit of bread and roasted malts. Aftertaste is a bit heavy on the sweetness from this beer. Decent but nothing spectacular.

Catching up some more... draft at Duckworth’s in Charlotte with Chris and Karen before we left for Bama. Pretty good, but not killer dunkel. Would have liked a little bolder flavor, but otherwise good.

Pours dark brown with a fully receding tan head. Notes of foamy roast, black debittered malt, malty lager yeast, spicy pepper, chocolate malt. Medium bodied and lightly sticky with lush carbonation.

On tap at Coasters. Muddy dark brown pour reminiscent of a cup of coffee. Light floral hop aroma with light toffee notes. Flavor is mild roasted coffee and light floral and citrus hops. Not a bad representation of the style this just isn’t a style I particularly enjoy that much or appreciate. But certainly good for what it is.
