Steeped in a long history dating back hundreds of years, this "old-fashioned" beer is again in vogue. Lager is the German word meaning "to store," so this beer ages three times longer than our ales do. "Dunkel" means dark in German, but don’t let the color fool you, it is by no means heavy, overbearing, or bitter. In fact, it proves to be a very drinkable session beer.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with white head. Caramel, nutty, malty aromas. Caramel, brown sugar, syrupy, malty flavors. Pretty good American version of a dunkel.

Walnut, charred oak nose. Hazy ruby brown, medium head, some lacing. Sweet barley malt flavor, mild walnut accents. Finishes earthy. Medium body. Serviceable.

12 oz bottle at the Bucket Shop Cafe in Atlanta, Georgia. The pour is a light haze copper orange with a minimal off white head. The aroma has some nut and soft toast malt. The taste is clean, fresh solid Dunkel flavor profile. The toasted malt is the main character, with some softly sweet nut behind. The palate is light bodied, soft carbonation and a clean finish. Simple, well made, easy to drink.

Bottle at the Marriott Airport in Atlanta. No glass pour so not sure what it looked like. Obviously dark. Aroma was mild with bread, toffee, and caramel. Little leather smelling. Taste was less exciting than the aroma. Rather light in the toffee and caramel that can make a Dunkel so good. Mild carbonation. Medium body. Finish was a little chalky. Mediocre.

Bottle into lager glass. Dark brown color. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, herbal hops, earthy. Chocolate taste with coffee, malt, nutmeg accents. Thick feel, long finish. Not as advertised to me, but really good nonetheless.

Bottle. Bready aroma, with some dark malt aroma. Nice, light body with taste of pumpernickel bread. (from notes)

Smells a little corn-y. Other than that a delicious dark lager. Excellent malts that pair well with food, sessionable flavor that keeps me going back for more. There is a nice roastiness that stands in to balance the sweetness. The corn aroma is only aroma, I don’t get any in the flavor.

Tap @ TacoMac, Cumming. Dark brown color, tan bumpy foam. Aroma of toasted, roasted grain. Tastes of burnt toasted bread. Hints of chocolate malt grain. Tart wheat notes. Charred grain bitterness in the finish. (3910)

11/27/13. On tap at the "Downtown Market" in Asheville. $3 pints while walking around and shopping? Yes, please! Deep ruby amber brown pour with a small khaki head. Malty aroma, caramel, toffee, biscuits, some dark fruits. Good enough flavor, malty, more caramel and toffee, light fruitiness. Tasty.

Wheaty and roasted aromas. Deep mahogany brown color. A lot more flavor than I expected from this style. Roasted malts and a caramel finish that begs for another taste. Really nice!
