COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Steeped in a long history dating back hundreds of years, this "old-fashioned" beer is again in vogue. Lager is the German word meaning "to store," so this beer ages three times longer than our ales do. "Dunkel" means dark in German, but don’t let the color fool you, it is by no means heavy, overbearing, or bitter. In fact, it proves to be a very drinkable session beer.

12 ounce bottle - $1.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, chocolaty-hued body with a moderate-sized, faint khaki-colored head. Slim lacing on the drop.

Smell: Solidly malty nose, though not overly effusive, with notes of darkened bread crusts, dark brown sugar, mild chocolate, milk chocolate, and nuts. Near nil fruitiness, very low hop accents.

Taste: Bread crusts, brown sugar, little hints of coffee, chocolate with a decent degree of sweetness. Very faint dark fruitiness. Light hop character, bitterness. Drying, malty finish with a carbonic pinch to it and a lingering nuttiness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation. Slightly dextrinous in the mouthfeel beyond the crisp suds.

Overall: Easy drinking and highly approachable, it’s a solid dunkel.

UPDATED: APR 12, 2014 Bottle into lager glass, deep dark brown color with thin tan head. Aroma of toasted malt sweetness, caramel some nuttiness and faint chocolate note. Taste adds notes of brown sugar and light earthy hop bitterness. Light body, light carbonation, soft with a clean light roast finish. Very tasty light dunkel.

Not a great fan. The nose is very grain like with some dark malt presence. Deep brown with a small white cap. Balanced with notes of toffee and roast and a touch of herbal German hops. Clean smooth finish and somewhat light in body for the style.

Brewgrass 2012 - pours amber-caramel, lightly hazy, with a retentive eggshell head. Nose is of basement notes, musty grains and earth. Caramel, bitter-backed with spent grains and woody pine. Light in the mouth but active. Ok. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown appearance with little transparency. Small tan head; modest lacing. Toasted malt aroma overlapped with hazelnut and caramel. Moderately sweet taste of caramel malts and toffee. Aftertaste is more earthy than bitter. Medium bodied mouthfeel and enough carbonation so that the finish is not too cloying.

Tasted on 8/9/12 from a capped 12oz bottle purchased at Bruisin’ Ales. Pours deep amber with an average tan head that slowly recedes to average lace that sticks to the inside of the glass a bit. The nose is classic dunkel with dark bread, dark chocolate, along with some clove and banana. The flavor is the same, with a bunch of dry bread and dark chocolate malt, and the same banana and clove yeast note, with some nice bitterness on the finish. The body is medium with average, stinging carbonation, and a long dark malt, banana, and spicy clove finish.

Bottle. Earthy roasted malt, light molasses, and dark fruit aroma. Brown with a small tan head. Dark roasted malt ... roasty, grainy, malty flavor. Medium body and carbonation. Very enjoyable malty beer.

Pours very dark with minimal head. I get effectively no smell off this one. It’s lighter than you’d expect for the color of the beer, and makes it very drinkable, especially on a hot day. I get some maltiness to the flavor, but not a huge amount of flavor.
