Steeped in a long history dating back hundreds of years, this "old-fashioned" beer is again in vogue. Lager is the German word meaning "to store," so this beer ages three times longer than our ales do. "Dunkel" means dark in German, but don’t let the color fool you, it is by no means heavy, overbearing, or bitter. In fact, it proves to be a very drinkable session beer.

Brewgrass 2012 - pours amber-caramel, lightly hazy, with a retentive eggshell head. Nose is of basement notes, musty grains and earth. Caramel, bitter-backed with spent grains and woody pine. Light in the mouth but active. Ok. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown appearance with little transparency. Small tan head; modest lacing. Toasted malt aroma overlapped with hazelnut and caramel. Moderately sweet taste of caramel malts and toffee. Aftertaste is more earthy than bitter. Medium bodied mouthfeel and enough carbonation so that the finish is not too cloying.

Tasted on 8/9/12 from a capped 12oz bottle purchased at Bruisin’ Ales. Pours deep amber with an average tan head that slowly recedes to average lace that sticks to the inside of the glass a bit. The nose is classic dunkel with dark bread, dark chocolate, along with some clove and banana. The flavor is the same, with a bunch of dry bread and dark chocolate malt, and the same banana and clove yeast note, with some nice bitterness on the finish. The body is medium with average, stinging carbonation, and a long dark malt, banana, and spicy clove finish.

Bottle. Earthy roasted malt, light molasses, and dark fruit aroma. Brown with a small tan head. Dark roasted malt ... roasty, grainy, malty flavor. Medium body and carbonation. Very enjoyable malty beer.

Pours very dark with minimal head. I get effectively no smell off this one. It’s lighter than you’d expect for the color of the beer, and makes it very drinkable, especially on a hot day. I get some maltiness to the flavor, but not a huge amount of flavor.

Bottle from Bruisin’ Ales. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Hints of caramel and malt on the nose. Thin mouthfeel. Slight smokiness on the tongue with some maltiness. Clean finisher. Very nice.

12 oz. Bottle. 300th rating for me! On vacation to Cedar Island, NC, I learned about Mother Earth Brewing. This is a solid Dunkel. Dark malt scent, hint of coffee, roasty. Dark brown/black pour with a frothy bubbly tan head. Medium bodied, creamy smooth texture. Dark malt fronted flavor with coffee and a roasted bitter finish.

Bottle pours brownish with red tinge and a cream colored head. Aromas are bready and sweet. Tastes are clean lager with some roast notes and a little hop bitterness on the back end. A quality session brew from NC.

Bottle. Kind of a plum colored reddish brown with a small white head. Nose is lightly creamy, malts, dark fruits, yeast. Pretty nice flavor, similarly malty, quite dextrinous. Not a huge dunkel-head, but I found this to be simple and tasty. Maybe my favorite Mother Earth beer.
