Steeped in a long history dating back hundreds of years, this "old-fashioned" beer is again in vogue. Lager is the German word meaning "to store," so this beer ages three times longer than our ales do. "Dunkel" means dark in German, but don’t let the color fool you, it is by no means heavy, overbearing, or bitter. In fact, it proves to be a very drinkable session beer.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2014 I have to re review this beer, the last offering I tried was much better than the first batch. The latest batch had me bringing home a growler which dissappeared very quickly. This stuff STILL looks dark and murky in the glass. Nice tan head. Light lacing. Aroma is toffee, roasted coffee, caramel and malt. Taste is caramel, malts, a hint of coffee, and it does definitely have a some what oyster stout taste. Eartly and slightly fruity. The taste has improved to be less grainy and abrasive. On the light side. Not too much carbonation. Slight bitter, yet still malty. A solid version of a classic German style. Much improved over what it has been.

12 oz. bottle dated 9/21/2015 into a pilsner glass A: A hard pour yields only 12" of beige foam that recedes rapidly to a collar and center bubbles. Clear ruby tea tinted brown color. S: Some light roast and dark fruit on the nose. T: Tart hops and roasty malt flavor. Neither cloyingly sweet nor burnt tasting. Not very complex or heavy. M: Smooth and somewhat creamy mouthfeel with light to medium body. Wet and medium to long coating finish. O: Tasty and drinkable, this is a very approachable dark lager. Always a bit expensive in my area though at 10.50/6. I like it and will continue to buy from time to time.

Bottle. Pours a clear light brown body with a small fizzy beige head. The nose is toasty with a chocolaty and nutty accent. Just a light hint of hops. The flavor is slightly sweet with a clean maltiness up front. Light bitterness on the finish, along with a little chocolate and light roast. Light bodied, very clean and smooth, soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty solid Dunkel.

Very nice , extremely drinkable beer! only one complaint, it erupted like a shaken coke upon opening.. what didn’t over flow filled the glass with a nice dark color and a thick head. The aroma was friendly and welcoming with notes of caramel, toasted malt and fresh fruit. tastes very pleasing with touches of citrus, and chocolate. Finish is short and sweet.

Bottle @ home, thanks to jcnielsen for sending. Pours a reddish orange appearance with a brown head. Light nuttiness, caramel, vanilla, toasted malt in the nose. Medium body. Quite malty though not overly sweet. A touch of acidity. A little chocolate, brown sugar, and some nuttiness. Pretty fine but nothing special.

Sample at Bad Parenting Club (plus a few dirty aunt/uncles?!): NC Beer Edition on 03/28/2015. Pours a hazy cola color with a medium beige head that recedes steadily. Spotty lacing. Aroma of roast malt, caramel and fruit. Light-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, earthy hops and fruit. The finish is sweet with a short malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle. Poured brown color with an average frothy tan head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Medium toasted malt & coffee aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium dark sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of average duration. This beer met my expectations.

12oz bottle, purchased 2/23/15 from Habersham in Savannah, Georgia. Bottled 11/17/14. Great chocolate, and toast malt up front in the aroma. Hint of coffee. Lighter to medium body, with an awesome full, creamy feel. Crisp, light carbonation, mildly tingly. Light slick finish. Hazy red / brown color, thin sort of bubbly off-white head, leaving good ropes of lace. Moderate sweet taste, nice light to moderate bitter. Now, this is a dunkel. One of the better American examples of the style that I’ve ever had. Very satisfying and well-rounded.
