"Constituting a beginning; giving origin to something derived or developed; original." Need we say more? True to its Imperial roots! This brew clocks in at 9.5% ABV, and over 100 IBUs! It is made with four varieties of grains resulting in a bold dark amber color and four varieties of hops, creating a subtle citrus aroma, and bitter, hoppy finish. Winner of a gold medal at the 2009 Santa Cruz National Organic Challenge, this recipe surely will not disappoint.

Golden Orange pour with a small white head. Aroma is caramel malt, light piney hops, alcohol, grass. Mouthfeel is creamy, with slight twinge of alcohol. Flavor is grain, caramel, grassy bitter hops, a bit of heat, pretty straightforward. Decent.

On tap at PP SC. Hazed amber orange pour with a lasting white head. Aroma of citrus, orange, caramel and raisins. Flavors are a bit too malty for my taste. Alcohol, orange, grainy, caramel. Bitter. Okay. Medium bubbles. Not super dry.

Are good well balanced Imperial IPA. Clean golden color with a head that disapates quickly. Taste of citrus with a strong hop bitterness and an alcohol finish.

A: The pour is a nice golden color with a big slightly off-white head and some mild lacing. S: The hops are certainly present on the nose with some nice citrus and pine notes. Also a fair amount of alcohol and (as pointed out by Bobby) fish food. T: Certainly a very bitter IPA with lots of pine and citrus, to a lesser extent. Again, the alcohol presence is pronounced, a bit too much for my liking. M: The body is medium to heavy for an IPA with a moderate carbonation. D: I can’t say this beer is bad, because I did enjoy it somewhat. But, it was more just bitter without much else going on.

Draft at PP Carlsbad. Clear Amberish pour, sticky white head. Lots of citrusy hops, grapefruit, tropical fruit, bitterness, light on the caramel malt balanced and a bit sweet. Some of the alcohol is noticeable though, which detracts slightly. This is very hop focused, like all good West coast IPA’s, very tasty.
