"Constituting a beginning; giving origin to something derived or developed; original." Need we say more? True to its Imperial roots! This brew clocks in at 9.5% ABV, and over 100 IBUs! It is made with four varieties of grains resulting in a bold dark amber color and four varieties of hops, creating a subtle citrus aroma, and bitter, hoppy finish. Winner of a gold medal at the 2009 Santa Cruz National Organic Challenge, this recipe surely will not disappoint.

A: The pour is a nice golden color with a big slightly off-white head and some mild lacing. S: The hops are certainly present on the nose with some nice citrus and pine notes. Also a fair amount of alcohol and (as pointed out by Bobby) fish food. T: Certainly a very bitter IPA with lots of pine and citrus, to a lesser extent. Again, the alcohol presence is pronounced, a bit too much for my liking. M: The body is medium to heavy for an IPA with a moderate carbonation. D: I can’t say this beer is bad, because I did enjoy it somewhat. But, it was more just bitter without much else going on.

Bottle shared with alexsdad06. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex resin citrus hop aroma. Moderate to heavy bitter flavor with a moderate to heavy bitter finish of moderate to long duration. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation and soft alcohol bite at the finish. Standout brew.

Yes, pine, resin, complexity, solid orange citrus and tropical flavours. Complex, great taste and drinkability. Thanks StephanSD.

On tap at PP SC. Hazed amber orange pour with a lasting white head. Aroma of citrus, orange, caramel and raisins. Flavors are a bit too malty for my taste. Alcohol, orange, grainy, caramel. Bitter. Okay. Medium bubbles. Not super dry.

22oz bomber pours clear copper with a near white head of foam. The aroma has a mix of thick malts, resiny hops, a bit of grapefruit and a bit of sweet citrus hard candy. The taste delivers plenty of resiny hop goodness in the form of firm pine hops and slivers of grapefruit and tangelo citrus hops. It has both resiny bitter hops and smooth hop flavor. Nice stuff.

22oz bottle, thanks to alexsdad06 for sharing. Mildly hazy amber color. Thin off-white head, leaves good ropes of lace. Great, big resiny hop flavor. Grapefruit, nice big resiny hop. Very tasty. Some light toasty malt, hint of caramel. Nice, distinct biscuity flavor. Good bigger bitter taste, light sweet. Just a very light, nice hoppy heat towards the finish. Super smooth, lighter carbonation. Lightly slick. Bigger body. Very satisfying DIPA.

22 oz bottle shared with Tmoney99 and DrSilverworm. Pours a clear golden amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have grapefruit citrus, resin, some herbal notes, orange, some sweet caramel with solid bitterness to the finish. Worth trying.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate pine, dank hops, and some light citrus. It pours a transparent amber/copper with a one finger orange-tinted off-white head that has decent retention. There’s a lot of soapy lacing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate citrus and some light tropical fruits. The finish has moderate grapefruit, light-moderate pine, and dank hops. It’s medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation.

Crisp amber coloured body with a great copper tint, a two centimetre tall tan head and some nice bubbles from the bottom. Aroma of crisp grapefruit, pine, hops, resin, a bunch of alcohol and some nice pineapple notes. Medium to Full-bodied; Very piney and resinous flavour body with a bright fruity note and some pungent malt - a lot of alcohol as well. Aftertaste shows resin, pine, grapefruit, malt, toffee and a hint of nuts too. Overall, a very nice Imperial IPA with tons of hop notes of all sorts of types and a deep resinous alcohol flavour at the end. Nice to try and worth sampling if you can get it! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Texas Liqour in Carlsbad, California on 19-March-2013 for US$8.99 sampled at home in New Paltz, New York on 30-March-2013.

Draft at PP Carlsbad. Clear Amberish pour, sticky white head. Lots of citrusy hops, grapefruit, tropical fruit, bitterness, light on the caramel malt balanced and a bit sweet. Some of the alcohol is noticeable though, which detracts slightly. This is very hop focused, like all good West coast IPA’s, very tasty.
