3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap, poured into a snifger. The aroma is grape jelly and toast that mellows towards a praline aroma. The beer is dark and oily looking with a cola color, and is topped by a light tan head that’s dense, but thin and soap with a filmy surface that has a light retention and specks of lace. The beer is a medium sweet and light bitter. It’s water thin and smooth with a fizzy carbonation and a light body. Flavors of dry molasses and nuts and dominant on the palate with a finish that’s spicy with toast and alight coffee flavor. The dry aftertaste is clean with notes of spice and toast.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 11/19/2014. Pours slightly hazy deep reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, brown bread, nuttiness, herbal, light fruitiness, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop/yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, brown bread, nuttiness, herbal, light fruitiness, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Fair amount of herbal/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, brown bread, nuttiness, herbal, light fruitiness, and yeast/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity, balance, and solid robustness of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop/yeast ester flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.2%. Overall this is a very good English brown ale style. All around good complexity, balance, and solid robustness of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop/yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Tap. Dark ruby color. Really nice, thick white head. Very mild nose. Pretty sweet -- notes of pecan in particular. Way too thin for what it is.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
12oz bottle from Steve
a little bit on the thin side could use more mouthfell and some stonger malt backbone

More black than anything. Almost opaque. Aroma is a bit metallic. Flavor is dirty like the ghettoblaster. Light body. Miss.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pour on tap at the brewery, dark brownish pour with off tan head, aroma brought notes of nuts, roast, ash, caramel, toffee, some very slight hints of cocoa. Taste is a mix of roast, coffee, over done coffee beans into some hints of toffee, cocoa, touch of spicy yeast, finishing roasted, ashy, dry.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Surprisingly complex beer. Lots of roasted nut flavors mixed with sweet caramel, yeast, cocoa, faint clove and brown sugar. A bit too sour for my liking, but it offers a unique twist. Medium bodied and darker than expected.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nice, roasty aroma with shades of chocolate. Small head that dissolved quickly. Full bodied and overall quite tasty. I believe this beverage rates out the best here at RateBeer among all Motor City offerings. After sipping three other beers that were all average (or less), I would agree this is definitely the one to try when visiting the pub.
