4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
650mL bottle. Pours pitch black with an off white head and an amazing hoppy grapefruit/citrus aroma with a nice coffee bean hint. Amazing grapefruit flavour with grassy notes. I love this beer, the hop is the star as it should be and the darker malts only add a slight creamy coffee hint.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Not in the class of the Thorny Goat. Lean palate, by comparison, with more obvious hops drying out the palate. Cut grass and roast on the nose, both of which are subtle. Some smoke and slate in the back palate provides some interest but otherwise a bit pedestrian.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled at an ESBLS tasting. It poured a black color with a foamy tan head. The aroma was of caramel, chocolate, a little cocoa and a touch of grassiness. The taste was similar with sweetness, but bitter and hung around for a while. A very good Black IPA.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours dark brown with a large, lasting head.
Nose shows a fair bit of grapefruit and tropical fruit-like hops. Underneath is some roasted malt. Also some resinous notes. Pretty rad!
Fairly roasty flavours but still quite approachable (especially for a BIPA!). Lots of hops in there too, providing big tropical fruit flavours. Excellent balance between the hops and roasted malt.
Could use a bit more carbonation.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Hops and roasted malts on the nose. Taste: Chocolate and coffee with Hops, and a slight bitter finish. Great stuff

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: NOV 21, 2012 On tap at Mountain Goat Brewery. Pours a near pitch black pour with a small white head. Aromas of roasted malts with a mocha and slight caramel flavour coming through with floral hops and pine notes. Taste is well balanced with a slight bitterness left lingering around your palate. This beer does knock you around and is highly enjoyable for a black ipa.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark cola, settles black with just a touch of ruby. Light brown head that quickly fades away to a collar. Some spotty lacing.
Pine, grapefruit, orange, chocolate, some coffee. Good nose and well balanced.
More of a chocolate covered orange with notes of coffee and caramel and then a pine and ripe grapefruit finish.
Full on assault in the mouth. Lots of bitterness. Pine and grapefruit. Not a lot of noticeable body in the mouth. Much more like a IPA with a darker color. Medium bodied and medium light carbonation.
Nice but not as good as Thorny Goat was. Probably a better straight IPA than a black IPA

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark cola colour with a frothy biege head. Coffee and fruit to the aroma. Very biter coffee, sweet finish. Not too bad.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Near on pitch black poor with a minimal head. Nice roasted malts with a mocha and caramel flavour coming through. The hops produce a pleasant balance with a enjoyable bitterness and floral aroma. Slight dry finnish.
For me this is another well balanced Ipa with the variety of hops and malts used.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, 10C. Black with an inch of pale beige head that fades to a coat. Aroma of nectarines, orange blossoms, mocha, pineapple. Bittersweet and very choc-orangey. Little sweetness. Silky mouthfeel, alive with moderate carbonation. Firm bur unobtrusive bitterness. Earthy cocoa note, suggestion of roasted barley. Another good BIPA (!) from the Goaters - lovely texture as ever, perhaps slightly less interesting but more harmonious than the Thorny Goat.
