4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
By 640ml bottle from Archive Brisbane. Nearly black, just a bit of red dawn poking through under a tight light brown cover. Gee my, arenít we lucky here in Australia to have brewers that create beer like this! Just sensational, if you like black IPAís please try it. Please Brewers@Mountain Goat re release the Pepperberry IPA.

ean palate, by comparison, with more obvious hops drying out the palate. Cut grass and roast on the nose, both of which are subtle

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
just unretired this one - itís been on tap at both the happy wombat and the grain store in newcastle during the last week, listed as before the dawn black ipa. dark purpley brown with a thin, large-bubbled, off-white head; aroma of lamingtons, stewed pear; modest bitterness for the style and without much new world hop presence, but some pleasant roasted notes as it warms, light caramel and milk chocolate; probably as much a brown ale as it is a black ipa

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured an opaque black with a brown-red edge. Three- to four-finger light tan head that diminished but retained as a thin bubble line. Laced as sudsy rings. Aroma of sweet malt. Taste strongly of roasted grain plus spices, citrus hops and a trace of roasted malt. Light body - lighter than was expected. Smooth long bitter finish. Quite nice.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
640mL bottle 2012
Deep ruby body, verging on opaque. Tight tan head holds
Moderate aroma; cooked citrus, woody spice, dried leafy hops, with some faint dry roast & biscuity malts.
Reasonably lively carbonation, full body with good length, yet alcohol well obscured.
Plenty of flavour on the palate; spicy, citrusy hops backed by lightly roasted malt notes of cocoa & charcoal. Firm bitterness on a drawn out finish.
Decent black IPA; well made - abv certainly well-masked!. Probably lacking the depth of complexity of the best examples.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black pour with a thick, fluffy pale brown head. Fruit cake, smoke, malty aromas, tiny bit of coffee. There is a little coffee in the taste too, some passionfruit, chocolate, roasty flavours, a little oily and very more-ish. Fantastic beer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
A fruit basket of aromas gives way to smoke, cigarettes, citrus, resin and coffee. The taste is fascinating, with lots of grapefruit, licorice, resin, and coffee to mention a few. There are a lot of flavours in here and the only real knock on it is that the palate is a little thin, but hey - itís a beautiful looker, all deep black with a tan head.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aromas of roasted malts and citrusy hops; pours a deep amber/brown with a thin tan head and delicate lacing. The taste is incredible - it retains the ítypicalí IPA characteristics (hoppiness, spiciness) and the roasted taste only kicks in after the beer is held in the mouth for a few seconds. Superb balance and complexity. Body is light and refreshing, a little on the fizzy side but nothing too extreme. The finish is long and hoppy - delightful. Overall, worth repeated drinks. Very pleasant and interesting.
