3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark cola, settles black with just a touch of ruby. Light brown head that quickly fades away to a collar. Some spotty lacing.
Pine, grapefruit, orange, chocolate, some coffee. Good nose and well balanced.
More of a chocolate covered orange with notes of coffee and caramel and then a pine and ripe grapefruit finish.
Full on assault in the mouth. Lots of bitterness. Pine and grapefruit. Not a lot of noticeable body in the mouth. Much more like a IPA with a darker color. Medium bodied and medium light carbonation.
Nice but not as good as Thorny Goat was. Probably a better straight IPA than a black IPA

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
A fruit basket of aromas gives way to smoke, cigarettes, citrus, resin and coffee. The taste is fascinating, with lots of grapefruit, licorice, resin, and coffee to mention a few. There are a lot of flavours in here and the only real knock on it is that the palate is a little thin, but hey - it’s a beautiful looker, all deep black with a tan head.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black pour with a thick, fluffy pale brown head. Fruit cake, smoke, malty aromas, tiny bit of coffee. There is a little coffee in the taste too, some passionfruit, chocolate, roasty flavours, a little oily and very more-ish. Fantastic beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
640mL bottle 2012
Deep ruby body, verging on opaque. Tight tan head holds
Moderate aroma; cooked citrus, woody spice, dried leafy hops, with some faint dry roast & biscuity malts.
Reasonably lively carbonation, full body with good length, yet alcohol well obscured.
Plenty of flavour on the palate; spicy, citrusy hops backed by lightly roasted malt notes of cocoa & charcoal. Firm bitterness on a drawn out finish.
Decent black IPA; well made - abv certainly well-masked!. Probably lacking the depth of complexity of the best examples.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured an opaque black with a brown-red edge. Three- to four-finger light tan head that diminished but retained as a thin bubble line. Laced as sudsy rings. Aroma of sweet malt. Taste strongly of roasted grain plus spices, citrus hops and a trace of roasted malt. Light body - lighter than was expected. Smooth long bitter finish. Quite nice.

Maybe it’s because I’d suffered a few dark hours Before The Dawn, but I thought this was a ripper. Looked great: as dark as you’d expect and the fat, lacing head was a real stayer. Hop-dominated aroma of mixed tropical fruit - passionfruit, pineapple. Galaxy mainly. Also some faint dark malts in the background. Good aroma balance. Quite a full mouthfeel, with that slightly syrupy texture that seems characteristic of highly hopped Australian ales. It works well here with that hefty 7.4% abv. Bitterness seems spot on for this weight and the malt bill provides a sold base. Ticks all the boxes for me. I liked this as much as their pepperberry collaboration with Mikkeller. I’d like to see a black IPA in their regular beer stable - I’d pick up a six-pack of this regularly if I could get it. Highlight of a poor day on Planet Earth. 4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aromas of roasted malts and citrusy hops; pours a deep amber/brown with a thin tan head and delicate lacing. The taste is incredible - it retains the ’typical’ IPA characteristics (hoppiness, spiciness) and the roasted taste only kicks in after the beer is held in the mouth for a few seconds. Superb balance and complexity. Body is light and refreshing, a little on the fizzy side but nothing too extreme. The finish is long and hoppy - delightful. Overall, worth repeated drinks. Very pleasant and interesting.

Bottle. Pours jet black with a dense light tan coloured head. Hangs around for a while leaving some delicate lacing and a thin film throughout. Aromas seem very typically of th style. Resiny and slightly spicy citrusy hops, light roasted grain and some dark caramel. Nicely balanced. Taste shows probably more of the roasted grain than expected. A hint of astringency in the bitter finish adds to the resiny hops. Quite full mouthfeel. I like it.
