COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rare Breed #4 is out and about. Now. It’s a Rye IPA, kinda same same but different to our regular IPA, but we use 20% malted rye in the grist in addition to malted barley. Rye gives a rich nuttiness to the mouthfeel that complements the big hit of galaxy and cascade hops that follows. On the nose it’s all fruity hops – tropical and zingy. The palate is full, bitter and rich – the rye helping out with this. It clocks in at 6.1%abv, 60BUs… Available at McCoppins, Slow Beer, Blackhearts & Sparrows and other discerning beery stores. Hope you like it!

Pours dark amber with a large, lasting head. Nose is pretyt fruity, with lots of peach, passion fruit and apricot. Underneath is spicy hints along with big caramel presence and toffee. Similar fruity flavours, but also showing a lot of malt, combining to create orange marmalade characters. Nice spicy, bready backing from the rye. Could use more carbonation. Lovely stuff!

UPDATED: APR 26, 2012 Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours bright amber with a small, fluffy white head. Head retention is pretty solid and leaves some spotty lacing. Nose is subtle spice, green hops and tropical/citric fruits. Sweet caramel backs the taste which is oozing with over ripe fruits - tangerine, peach, apricot. Lots of zest. Subtle, yet lingering bitterness with soft and prickly carbonation. Nice work, very good beer which showcases the rye very well

Another very good seasonal from MG. They really have the base IPA for these beers down pat and the rye malt provides, at least to my palate, a grainy, barnyard overlay that reminds me a touch of daggy old Eastern European pilsners. Hoppy yes, aggressive no. Aniseed infused hops to finish. Good value at $10 too. A touch under-carbonated?

Bottle from Parkhill cellars. Delicious IPA, very nicely hopped. Aromas of grain, caramel, cherries, grass, and liquorice. Taste is sweet and bitter, with long length. Palate is velvety, almost creamy, with a medium-to-full body. Amber, with a frothy head.

Nice aroma, hints of tropical fruit and hoppiness. Colour is deep amber with a thin course tan head. Flavour is a bit thin upfront which moves to some breadiness and long hoppy finish. Finish is long but well balanced.

Pours amber with a sweet passionfruit aroma and a nice off white head with wonderful lacing. The aroma flows through to the taste nice a nice earthy backing from the mix of rye malt. I was so surprised by this beer and i would have to say it is the best rye IPA i have ever had, i must get more! Bottle was labeled Mountain goat Rare breed rye ipa "Rippa" and its a single batch that i hope they do again in the near future.
