3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 mkel07 (2340) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - MAR 8, 2013
640ml bottle from Archive Beer Boutique. What a beer beer to mark 15 years of brewing. These guys were one of the first craft brewers in Australia and they are still putting out great beer. Here’s to another 15 years. Strong dark copper colour with a rich caramel flavour that fills the mouth. It may be a limited release but I am glad that I got my hands on a botte.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 hawthorne00 (1855) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - OCT 23, 2012
Bottle, 13C. Cloudy darkish amber with an off-white head - looks pretty like normal Hightail. Aroma of caramel, bread, prunes, flowers, pear drops, vague citrus. Mouthfeel creamy verging on syrupy. Very sweet before firm bitterness. Raisins, figs, brandy, toffee, spices. Boozy but not raw. Sweetness doesn’t linger too long and there’s pepper at the bitter finish. Pleasant with some depth to the malt flavours, but a bit untidy. Maybe it’ll come together with a little age.
4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 davidm (1773) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - NOV 1, 2012
Bottle from Parkhill cellars. Great malty treat. Aromas of caramel, truffle, hints of chocolate and anisette. Taste is sweet, with light sourness, and long length. Palate is syrupy, and full bodied. Brown, with a frothy head.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Stew41 (1572) - Woodend, AUSTRALIA - JAN 5, 2013
Not really scotch ale for mine; more Belgian ale. I don’t think this bottle is at its best but I’ll rate for the record. Bitter fruits with good depth and a hint of candied sugar around the edges. Problem is that I can’t reconcile the layer of skunk flavours that lurk. Will try again to be fair.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 maneliquor (1552) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - DEC 9, 2012
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours dark amber with a small off white head which quickly disappears. Nose is full of nuts and caramel with a hint of pine. Pretty one dimensional. Taste is similar. Too boring. Hides the alcohol well. Not that there is anything wrong with this it’s just very flat and one dimensional all round. The double hightail was much better.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Davros (1473) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - NOV 27, 2012
Pours dark copper with a fading head.
Nose shows heavy caramel and bready melanoidin malt. Also some spicy notes.
A fair bit of rich sweet malt as a flavour, very sweet. Some spicy hops, bitterness and booze in the finish but not quite managing to tame the sweetness.
Carbonation seems a little full on.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 bluebetty (1019) - AUSTRALIA - MAR 3, 2013
Bottle. Pours a dark bonze with a creamy offwhite head. Aromas are a little confussing. Some grainy malt, a little fruity sourness and some soy sauce. Flavours show plenty of sweetness. Some alcohol on the finish with more of that soy sauce showing through. Medium mouthfeel. Not really sure on this one.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 fletchfighters (817) - AUSTRALIA - OCT 31, 2012
640 ML bottle
Dark orange amber color. One finger light brown head that drops to a thin film. Looks quite heavy in the glass. Some spotty lacing.
Thick, heavy nose. Lots of caramel followed by orange, pine, dark stewed fruits and some pear. A bit of a syrupy quality in the nose. Alcohol is restrained.
Taste is thick as well. Lots of syrupy and thick caramel. Stewed dark fruits, lots of cherries, some bread, banana and nuts. Good flavor profile.
Rather full and thick bodied. low carbonation. hints of alcohol here and there. A tad bit less alcohol would be good though.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Maris (748) - Canberra, AUSTRALIA - DEC 16, 2012
From a 640ml bottle on 16/12/2012. Pours a dark cloudy amber with a small head. Has quite a big malty aroma, with some slight toffee and fruit notes. The flavours are dominated by the malt, with caramel and toffee sweetness, with some nuttiness, spiciness, and a slightly tart, fruit peel bitterness. A fairly nice drop.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 ComradeK (731) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - DEC 30, 2012
640ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep chestnut, with a large off-white head, which lasts well and leaves decent lacing. Rye toast, toffee, floral hops and a touch of Scotch whisky are all present in the aroma. Faint floral hops lead into thick, syrupy malt, which offers burnt caramel and brown sugar flavours. It finishes with an unexpected peppery hops kick, and leaves a sweet malt aftertaste. This is an interesting take on the Scotch ale style; although it has the expected sweet malt flavours and noticeably high ABV, its hoppy finish moderates those aspects of the beer, giving it a slightly more lively feel than most other beers of the style.
