COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark brown Belgian-style strong ale has been aging for 6 months in a sour merlot barrel. AT 9.5% ABV, this complex ale hits the palette with a pleasant tartness, woody tannins, and a hint of dark caramel. The Dirty Dark truly shows the magic of the barrel. Before touching the wood, this beer was malty, sweet and slightly heavy on the palate. After undergoing a re-fermentation in the barrel, the result is a dry, sour, ale that lends just a hint of its sweet malty past.

On tap @ Vine Street Brewpub. Deep clear copperish brown, with a ligh lacing head. Wine-like sour aromas with some oak and raisins. Taste was pretty earthy and like a smooth sweet wine with a dry finish. Lots of wood and a complex-ish sour flavor. I’d be a bigger fan if it didn’t taste like merlot so much.

fruit, wood, nuts, twig + berries sorta nose (prickly acetobacter/vinegar-like acid) with moderate levels of basement must and dried/moldy dark fruit (plum, cherry, berries, etc.). medium body, frothy carbonation and striking acidity give it a quenching, rounded, lively texture. merlot character is absent but wood is considerable. dark malts are bready, alcohol is unnoticeable and oak/fruit/bacteria character is actually close to that found in some batches of La Roja (dried fruit/crystalline esters with mild balsamic notes). tannic, tart, musty and fruity with low sweetness and medium-low bitterness. surprised to find this one in good shape. came in with low expectations and left surprised.
