COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“I and IPA” is our brand new Imperial IPA. We used fresh lemongrass to compliment the citrus notes of a new hop variety called Summit. Summits are a high alpha (bitter) hop that contributes a serious grapefruit nuance to this beer. We also included 60 pounds of orange blossom honey for increased alcohol and more citrus. Weighing in at 9% ABV, we’ll only be serving this in half pints at the pub, but feel free to take home a quart or two. “I and I” is the Rastafarian terminology for a communal “we” instead of “you and me”, “we”, or “they”. Just say “I and I”. Bob Marley will be played.

Draft Cloudy peach. Uneven tiny-bubbled head. Orange rind and apricot aromas fill the nose. Whisper of garlic and honeycomb. Sharp and overly brisk carbonation. Heavily sweet and resinous, upfront. Fresh orange and a vibrant mintiness trails behind. Chewy resins silence some of the unpleasant acidity, but the acidity still wreaks havoc on the drinkability as it overwhelms the palate. Harsh notes of aspirin emerge from the depths, and the hop character remains quite unrefined from then on. Wafery malt sweetness is faintly perceptible, and what’s there is very unpronounced. Finishes with a sharp and chalky dryness as lemongrass and acidic hops linger. Nice profusion of citrus burps abound after each belch. All in all, the carbonation is overly chalky and therefore hinders the juicy hop qualities. The hop character is also disappointingly shallow, one dimensional, and far too acidic rather than sweet and succulent. Decent.

On tap at Mountain Sun and served in a small 8oz wine glass. Smell was herbal, flowery hops. Orange color with little to no head. There was no bitterness nor citrus flavors from the hops, just a floral, soapy (in a good way) flavor and some honey. I liked this beer a lot. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 11-26-2007 03:28:44

On tap at the brewpub. Jolly Rancher candy aroma with lots of fruitiness. Wonderful strawberry aroma. Very smooth beer with a long hoppy floral finish. Outstanding.

On tap @ Power Plant Strong Ale Festival. Candi sugar & citrus aroma (orange & grapefruit). Hazy orange color. Initial taste is sweet, wildflower honey, & candi sugar followed by brown sugar and a pronounced pinyness and to a lesser extent, citrus.

This is a nice "extreme", "double", or as the waitress termed it, "American", IPA. The lemongrass tames the bitterness of the piny hops but not the bite. What’s left is a grapefruit, apricot, and floral bouquet.

Tap @ Mountain sun: Poured a slightly hazed amber color with a large off-white head. Big sweet grapefruit hop aroma. Sweaty and grassy. The smell is thick and sweet. Caramel malt flavor starts then the hops take over from the middle to the finish. Piny bitter dry finish. Moderately bitter. Medium to full bodied. Some warmth and almost silky.

On tap at the brewpub on 10/14/07: Pours a transparent dark bronze amber with a full, airy, clingy-lacing light tan head. Aroma of fairly fresh grapefruity hops and nice caramel and pale malty undertones. Starts rich and pale malty sweet with nice resiny citrus and piny bittering and flavor hops. Finishes slightly warming and bittersweet, but is pretty drinkable and flavorful. A good IIPA.

On draft at the brewpub. Pour comes amber with light carbonation and a wispy head. Tons of orange, pineapple, tangerine and other yummy citrus on top of a nicely sweet caramel malt is what greats your nose. The flavor does not have the powerful hop bitterness that the aroma might suggest, but they are there and plenty noticeable. There is a hint of pine that I did not detect in the aroma but mostly citrus, lemon, passion fruit, and an orange sweet malt. The mouth feel is a bit sticky but it finishes dry and the bitterness lingers. Very good.

I’ve been sipping this one for a while and continue to love it. It’s certainly sweeter than your typical DIPA but there’s an added complexity that I dig. Must be the crazy adjuncts they throw in...I love adventuresome brewers that pull shit off!
