COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our first of many 100% Brettanomyces fermented I.P.A’s. This beer is an Imperial Black Ale (I.B.A.) fermented with Brettanomyces Drie Fontenein in a second use red wine barrel. It is a India Black Ale since we use just enough black malt to make the beer black in color, without adding too much roast flavor or bitterness. This once “wild” yeast Brett Drie lends flavors and aromas of tart pineapple and “baryard” or “horseblanket” that are signature characteristics of Brettanomyces strains. These flavors complement the fruity notes of American hops and slightly roasty malt character.

Tap @ Mountain Sun Boulder. Pours a black appearance with a dark brown head. Tangy dark berry, red wine, dark chocolate, barnyard, somewhat roasty aroma. Fairly dry, dark chocolate, roasty coffee, moderately hoppy, tangy red vinous, light raspberry, mild pineapple flavor. Sounds like a really stupid idea but this was pretty tasty.

Tap at Vine Street - we may have reached the final frontier with brett beers - with Crooked Stave doing a brett imperial porter and now this (which is essentially an imperial stout fermented with brett, I am not really sure where else we can go - pour is black with a thick ring of tan foam - pour is an interesting mix of rich, chocolaty malts, lightly green hoppiness, and a mixture of bretty phenols (earthy barnyard, light pineapple, some plastic) - surprisingly, it all works well together - creamy texture, full body - flavor is allimperial stout up front - some rich chocolate, moderate roast, some alcohol heat - moderate hop bitterness braces the palate for the brett character that follows - light tropical notes, some musky qualities, some orvalish character - light oak on the tail end - somewhat minty finish - I am not sure why all this seems to work well together, but it does - I like it.
