COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a rich, robust porter, cleverly crafted to integrate the aromas and flavors of espresso coffee malt and bitter-sweet chocolate malt. Inspired by owner Brendan Moylans’ daughter Chelsea, this is an American-Irish Style Porter that dark beer drinkers will love

The words "flavors of espresso, coffee malt, and bittersweet chocolate" give you a clue as to how hearty and robust this porter really is. Enjoying this in my brand new, nifty, shiny English pint glass. It has a fine, medium-brown head with a pretty dark body. I wouldn’t say completely black, as you can see a light trace of brown in it. One thing’s for certain, this beer looks dense and malty. The head itself looks pretty dense and almost pancakey. Aroma is very striking initially. Not your everyday roastred malt aroma - the bitterness of the chocolate is really unique and enveloping, with only a hint of espresso peeking through. The bitterness of this beer definitely does not come from any hops! It has an almost creamy edge in the nose. It smells a little like chocolate cookie dough. Once the mouth, this turns into one of those very easy beers to drink (I would never have guessed from the aroma). Dense, the body almost reminds of of a cask-conditioned or nitro-powered brew. Only a little creamy in the mouth, though. The coolness of this beer almost makes you feel like you’re getting gipped on flavor, but at only 5% ABV, I wouldn’t let this warm up too much if you want more of a peek into the beer’s qualities. The only things that are apparent in the flavor are light-roasted malt with that same bitter chocolate character as experienced in the aroma, but not quite that heavy. A very, very smooth beer, dense and extremely silky. Finishes a little bitter, but not as bitter as expected. A very easy porter to drink - for such a dense beer sometimes you don’t want such a strong flavor palate. Heavy beer + heavy flavor = too much. Being heavy, thick and dense, Chelse Moylan’s Porter has a light flavor, making it easier to stomach the weight of this beer. Personally, I’m a fan of the more flavorful styles of porters, but considering how dense this is I’m pretty pleased with what flavors they managed to throw into the mix. I’d definitely drink this sitting down at a pub somewhere, especially in cold weather. Not high alcohol, but it feels extremely traditional, especially when consumed using the right glass.

Bottle at home with Drew and Lyoli. Pours dark brown with a medium, creamy beige head. Rich, medium roast aroma with aroma featuring chocolate, mocha-like syrup. Flavor is medium sweet, has some mild caramel and chocolate, lightly burnt wood, faint bitterness. Medium in body with fine, creamy carbonation. Dries out somewhat in the finish with some brown sugar, mild roastiness, faint tar and cocoa. Very good.

22. Pours jet black with a dense, creamy, surging, lightly sudsy dark tan head. Dense sheeting lace. Beautiful to see. Big roasty coffee bittersweet chocolatey nose. Creamy medium body with subdued carb. Bittersweet, toasty, roasty, acrid, chalky, dried out mid palate. The coffee seems to be a major contributing downfall here, with the chocolate not far behind. They also offer big boosts to the flavor and aroma, but they simultaneously detract. Shame.

22oz bottle. Dark brown pour with light brown head. Aromas of coffee with a slight tinge of hops. Flavor is hoppier than your average porter as well, which in this case was a good thing. Slightly sweet - quite drinkable.

An exceptionally big head is also noisy. A finger worth is retained for a while. Quite dark with only a bit of red. A big aroma of coffee, chocolate, funk, and some smoke. The flavor profile is much like the aroma but with some dark fruit. There is a sourness that was very steady. A nice creamy feel. This is a nice sessionable beer.

Bottle at The Rake. Very dark brown. Big lasting tan head. Big liquorice and butter. Some dark fruits but really buttery. Just not good

Bomber from BevMo Salinas. Nose is dark chocolate with hints of coffee and caramel. Lightly hazy dark brown with golden edges and a medium tan head. Flavor is coffee up front with the dark chocolate and light bitterness fading in after a few seconds. Pretty tasty for a standard porter.

Pours a clear deep mahogany with clingy-lacing off-white head. Has a lightly sweet dark caramel and grainy with a touch of milk chocolate. Body starts with average fullness and a light malty sweetness with some light toasty nutty flavor before a slightly drier muted finish. Pretty smooth and drinkable, but uninteresting.
