ElDuderino (136), Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, USA Apr 22, 2009 On tap at Deep Ellum, bright clear gold body with tight pure white head. Really bright crisp hoppy flavor, more than I expected. Really bitter, puckering hops with that hop burn. Kinda a one hit wonder as the malts never really followed up. Still, not too over powering and great piney flavor. hophead21112 (110), Louisville (LEWISville), Colorado, USA Apr 19, 2009 Slightly hazy gold/orange pour with a decent white head that hangs around for a bit, sticky lace. Looks good. Citrus aroma with a hint of pine, a little malty sweetness tries to get your attention but the hops dominate for sure. Medium body, acceptable carbonation, finishes with grapefruit bitterness. Very nice. Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Apr 14, 2009 Bottle. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Pine, caramel malt, some light grapefruit bitterness and a hint of citrus. Not as good as the d-IPA. illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Mar 27, 2009 Bomber poured into a pint glass. Clear golden orange with a cascading fluffy light beige head. Great retention and lots of lacing. Aromas of grapefruit, caraway, and bread dough. harp resinous hop flavor with sourdoughy malt as a basis. Very herbal and spicy rather than the typical citrusy flavor of a west coast IPA. Very solid bitterness with a touch of hop astringency. Medium bodied with perfect carbonation. A very good IPA, for hopheads only. BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Mar 26, 2009 Bottle. Pours lightly hazy orange with an average, rocky, white head, somewhat lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, grain, meal), heavy hops (flowers, perfume, pine, citrus), average yeast (sweat) with notes of apple, pear, peach, and rind. Medium bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a spicy-dry finish. Long duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness. A touch soapy as it lingers in your mouth. blazingspiral (39), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA Mar 20, 2009 Well, after trying Moylan’s single, double, and triple IPA offerings, I am actually most impressed by the single (this one).
Like many Cali IPAs, this is a "hop-heads-only" type of affair. After the first glass, my mouth was so coated with bitter acids that I could hardly speak properly. It was like my saliva glands were going into overdrive. I know I had a really fresh bottle and have yet to experience an older version of this brew.
Anyway, the aroma has a nice mix of pine, grass, and grapefruit. More grass, herbs, and resin appear in the flavor, with lemons running around in there too. Alcohol and malts are barely noticed under all the bitterness. Wow, if you want to be overwhelmed by hoppiness, get a fresh bottle of this. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Mar 12, 2009 Really? Only 3.5? I don’t believe it, but maybe it doesn’t hold up well. Light clear orang with a reasonable creamy offwhite head. The nose is furiously hopladen. The piney citrus, the resinous floral, somethin spicy. A bit of a darkerish malt pops in. The mouthfeel is full, but not over the top for the style. Malty flavors bowled over by hops, bitter, but not bracing. Piney, peppery, grapefruit lingers in the mouth. Maybe the grapefruit interacts with a bit of astringency in a slightly negative way. Tea like bitterness lingers with resin. Big fan. BOLTZ7555 (1053), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Mar 8, 2009 Huge disappointment here. Undoubtedly got an old bottle...the hop profile diminished significantly and I predominantly tasted Lipton iced tea and sweet malt. Cloudy brass color with a small ivory head and a fair amount of sticky defiant lacing. Will definitely have to rate this one again...
