4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: SEP 26, 2005 Rerate: Again this produced a wonderful creamy head and outstanding lace. The flacores seemed more balanced this time, I quite enjoyed it enough to bump up the score .2
Ratebeer tulip at cellar temp: Hazy deep orange hue with a massive creamy off-white head and very good lace. (be slow on the pour with this beer) The aroma is mighty hoppy with pine, grapefruit, herbs attacking the node with a followup of buttery toast, sugar cookie dough, vanilla, and some alcohol. The strong bitter and piney taste is a big rush. There is some tones of malt but mostly it just a supporting role. The finish is dry and has a ling lingering bitterness and resin taste. This full to medium-bodied brew isnít as balanced as the best of the genre, but itís still one mighty fine brew, a hop head delight.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured out of 22 oz. bottle, bought at Liquorama in Upland, CA 10/21/03. Pours to hazy brown-orange color with a tight, frothy head that lingers-- resilient but spotty lacing. Nose of honey, hops and a hint of citrus. Thin body with very strong, very bitter hop flavor that threatens to take over not only your mouth, but also your entire body. Slight tinge of sweet malt, then extremely bitter, shocking hop finish. Long and mean, drying and almost numbing, and a little bit sticky; like drinking a pine cone, but without the intensity of pine flavor. As it mellows, honey, malt, and slight pistachio nuttiness emerge. Good for awhile, but there are better Double IPAs.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
a cloudy tobacco-leaf golden carmine color. luxurious lingering head, it's a dazzling display of dough colored lace: from thick curtain to tattered bits-- it's like a time-lapse photograph showing the effacing hand of time on delicate linen. aroma is pure hearts of hop-- with a sinus clearing puissance; firm malts dwell just beneath a mist of alcohol, and have nurtured rich cookie-dough tanned and buttery sweet grains. the flavor bites early and often, leading with convincing bitterness and smooth carbonation, and then dovetailing with cracker jack toasted sweetness, followed by still another reverberation of piney bitterness that drones sweetly in slowly diminishing volumn like a fading lullaby.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Hazy orange, reddish color. OK head and lacing. Smell is very malty and slightly piney. Average head. Taste is sweet and very malty with hop bitterness after the swallow. Big bodied and thick. Very good double IPA.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Slightly hazy orange color. With a small white head and nice lacing. Resinous sweet aroma. Caramel and pine. Sweet and thick up front then some hop flavors come into play. Malt is very big, especially for an IIPA. Bitterness lingers for a bit but not overly long. Body is quite syrupy. Very nice beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark reddish/amber, excellent head and sheets of lacing. This had a super thick palate - they put plent of sweet malts in this to balance the hop. Hops are strong, but not overpowering, fruity and resiny; leaves a very long lingering bitterness - I liked that a lot. Overall, this is one thick and chewy monster of a beer. Doesn't seem to mix well with other beers in a session. I made sure to try this by itself when I rated it - much better taste experience.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Thick, syrupy, hazy copper w/ no head retention, but decent lacing of off white foam. Herbal and lemony citrus hop aroma w/ some woody hints and caramel malt and fruitiness; also had very small hints of roast. Flavor is bitter throuhgout, but had a great malt backbone to counter bitterness. The caramel flavor is dominated by the herbal hop flavor and bitterness which lingers into the finish. There are also some fruity notes. It's lightly astringent w/a fuller body and low carbonation; pleasant warming alcohol. This one is not as citrusy as most other 2X IPA's, and it also seems to be more well balanced toward bitter than most which an IPA should.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A very red color, the color of cherry wood. A sweet pine aroma with some citrus( grapefruit) A big malt backbone to support all the hop aroma. Resin is the first adjective when describing the taste, aroma, and mouthfeel of this beer. As it is thick and sticky. However a lot of the hop stickiness is to the malts, as this is very balanced in the 3 senses. Smooth and strong.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Burnt orange color with sticky white lacing - explosive aroma of citrus, pine, hops and slight sweetness - heavy malty flavor up front(caramel mostly) - really chewy throughout - hops gradually swell up from underneath the malts, finally becoming dominant in the finish, along with a heavy grapefruit flavor - extremely well-balanced, complex progression of flavors - a full-body experience of a beer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: NOV 4, 2003 Is this an Arrogant Bastard clone? Grapefruit, grapefruit, and more grapefruit. And a bit of pine, just for your sipping pleasure. Copper body with plenty of "floaties." The hops really do dominate the malt backbone, and this beer doesn't present anything I haven't tried before.
