porterhouse (991), Alna, Maine, USA Sep 1, 2007 (22 oz. bottle from Julio’s Liquors, cellared for 8 mos. after purchase) This beer really has alot going for it...Pours slightly murky dark caramel brown with one finger of slightly amberish biege head. Aroma is rich, malty and sweet...melted caramel, cotton candy, toffee, rock candy, even some coffee. Nice heavy, almost chewy mouthfeel. A touch sticky in finish. Beautiful well-defined rings of lacing. Looks awesome in the snifter. Flavor is rich and malty with a nice bitter finish. Slightly burnt caramel, hints of rock candy. Even a little bit smoky. Finishes a touch hot. Mellow and tasty. Just a nice big beer and I’ve really enjoyed both I’ve had from this brewery.
jake65 (1326), Meridian, Idaho, USA Nov 27, 2008 Bottle: Amber pour wit a huge fluffy beige head. Sweet and sugary in the nose with caramel and bits of faded hops. Tastes of sweet caramel malt and citrus hops. Some light bits of floral. Sweet, fruity, and bready. Creamy mouthful. Very good. GMCC2181 (504), Bear, Delaware, USA Nov 18, 2008 Bottle from sparky27. Light red in color. Aroma of malt and a touch of hops. Taste is hoppy for a barleywine. Sweet fruits and sugar as well. The texture is kind of thin, which makes it easy to drink but takes away from the overall impression. Good barleywine but just missing that something... trevor211 (158), Seattle, Washington, USA Nov 18, 2008 Pours very orange, but a full glass looks more like a dark bronze. Medium-sized dissipating head. Aroma is wonderful – very pungent, packed with hops and roasty malts. This is one of those beers you can easily smell as you’re pouring it. Also a bit of (very) ripe fleshy fruit – fig, or maybe even papaya. Flavor doesn’t pull through as much as I’d like. There isn’t a whole lot to counter the bitterness of the huge amount of hops, and it ends up hitting the back of your tongue with reckless abandon. I’d love to see more balance, and simply more flavor. For how fragrant this brew is, the flavor is very slight. Good overall, but not my favorite barley wine by any means. drfabulous (803), Columbia, Missouri, USA Nov 2, 2008 Lots of sweet. Lots of malt. Most of what you want in a barley. This one sat over six months in my basement breaking the six month rule. No mind. Mellowed, but still good. rustychiles (546), Mesa, Arizona, USA Nov 2, 2008 Pours a hazy orangeish brown with a soapy white head. Aroma of malt, fruits, hops, caramel. Flavor is malt, lots of hops, very sweet and some earthiness to it. Pretty good barleywine.
