Our assertively bold Barley Wine features Maris Otter pale malt and English Progress hops. We racked this batch onto fresh organic dates from California’s central valley. French Oak/Stillwater Port.

This even has a port like purple hue to it somehow; it is a bit on the hazy side (though not heavily so), and it is topped by a light tan colored head. The nose has a sour’ish note to it, seemingly like a tart wine barrel. Aromas of juicy Port fruit character, concentrated grape notes, and a big, general fruitiness that I can’t really pin as attributable to grapes.

The beer tastes sweet, with a tart edge, and a spicy alcohol note in the finish. Juicy prune flavors are balanced by spicy oak notes; latter is peppery, with some heat that almost seems chile like in character. This is certainly a little on the hot side from the oak and alcohol. I like the sweetness here, it is overly so and plays up the fruit character that contributes specific flavors of prune, dried figs, and a touch of Concord grapes. The finish can have a bit of astringency to it, but it is mostly just hot.

The aroma of this beer is so nice, too bad the flavor is so hot, but still I find that I am enjoying this beer, it is definitely great to be able to try this.

Pours a dark amber with a small light tan head. Aroma is of caramel, roasted malts, citrus and piney hops. Caramel, some roasted malts, wood, piney hops, nice alcohol bite. Strong alcohol flavor, but light on the barleywine taste. Definitely unique, though.

On tap at Papago. Hazy brown pour with a foamy head. Aroma of toasted malt, dried fruit and wood. Sweet flavor follows the aroma with some warming alcohol on the finish. Good, but just a bit too sweet.

on tap at papago 3/4/11. seems clear. ruby color. sour cherry aroma dominates notes of yeast, umami, spice, toffee, vanilla and a bunch of booze. those characteristics carry over to the flavor and are met with the port/vinous and salty qualities. it is rich and sludgy... alcohol, spice and tannins try to help out. neat. 8/3/7/3/16

tap at papago during RBWG-hazy red hue with a small white head. big woody nose-the port barrel give this beer a nice toasted oak note. pleasant. big alcohol note on the nose as well. wow! huge alcohol and sweet flavors with a nice woody kick on the finish. piney hops and toasted oak dry the beer out from all the sweetness. huge alcohol noted on the finish as well. really a decent beer, but im really not into this type of beer anymore.

On tap a Stone’s Oakquinox. Pours with a clear copper hued body and absolutely no head. Aromas of port, wood, tannins, light fruit notes and caramel. Flavors are quite tannic, port, fruity, dry, caramel. Finishes quite bitter. Very low carbonation but quite a lot of warmth.

A: The pout is a clear amber color with a minimal off-white head forming. S: Oh boy, not good. Booze and acetone are there immediately. A little bit of sweet caramel and bread, and then some more booze and paint thinner. A mild oak and vanilla note in the back. T: Not surprisingly, things aren’t much different on the palate. A harsh flavor of hot alcohol and acetone. Perhaps a touch of burnt plastic, too. Really tannic oak flavors, and that added astringency really isn’t needed. M: Medium in body with a low carbonation. O: This was painful to drink. Just awful flavors.

On tap at Beer Revolution. Pours dark copper with a thin beige head and a sweet fruity aroma. There is a sticky sweet toffee flavor that quickly turns to sour oak and dry bitter with a warming alcohol trail. Very complex.

Nice hazy deep brown color with almost no head. Beautiful port barrel aroma with vanilla caramel and oak notes. Tastes of caramel port and vanilla with subtle oak and an alcoholic finish.

On tap at Papago. My last RBWG rating, finally! Pours a cloudy brown color with a small white head. The aroma was nice sweet oaky and sugary port notes, some earthy malts. The flavor is very sweet and warm; caramel, oaky, very rich, port throughout, burnt brown sugar, fairly dry. Interesting.
