Chocolate truffles, cocoa, espresso coffee, burnt currants, the sweetness of a sherry - all come to mind when enjoying an Imperial Stout. A rich porter of English origin brewed to withstand the long voyage from London to Czarist Russia. The classic "Winter Warmer". Big, Strong, Malty Stout.

Bomber from John’s Grocery. Very black, small brown head. Aroma is all roast malt and coffee. Roasted flavor up front, coffee, a bit of chocolate and licorice. Very rich, smooth body. Warming finish. This is really tasty.

(65 cl bottle from Bryggens Ølbar; No visible BBD) Pours black with little tan head that quickly recedes to remain as film and lace. Decent regeneration. Aroma is roasted malt with notes of coffee, dark bread and a hint of alcohol. Quite full-bodied on the palate, softly carbonated with oily texture and a dark, protracted warming finish. Flavour has some sweetness but it’s balanced well by the roasted malt bitterness and the alcohol.

65cl, as Ryan Sullivan’s Imperial Stout, American brew, from De Hopduvel Gent, complex Stout, roasted/spicy and slightly floral/fruity, balanced, hazy, good head, good brew, yet expensive!

A bottle that is at least a year or two old. Aroma is surprisingly complex with nice roast and bitter chocolate. Light tobacco, ash and leather. Some prune and plum notes. Medium light vegetal anise note that is more apparent as it warms. Some light cardboard occupation notes. Hints of alcohol. Pours black with a moderately thick light mocha head that steadily recedes to the edges where it lingers. Light lacing and small legs. Flavor is similar to aroma with quite a bit of roast and some light bitter chocolate notes. Moderate ash and light tobacco and leather. Some light prune and raisin. Moderate bitterness and light alcohol spice. Some wet cardboard and soy sauce oxidation in medium low amounts. Lingering bitterness, roast and light fennel note. More alcohol as it warms. Mouthfeel is medium to medium light bodied and slightly oily with medium low carbonation. Medium astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall the aroma is pretty decent with a lot of complexity but unfortunately the flavor is dominated by astringent roast and some unpleasant oxidation.
