0o9i (272), Reno, Nevada, USA Oct 9, 2008 22oz bottle. Opaque body is topped with a rather large, tan head of creamy texture and leaving behind generous lace. Nose is dominated by earthy musk, but also contains a good dose of roasted malts for coffee and chocolate, dark, tart berries that have been cooked, and undertones of booze. Mouth is fullish with awesome carbonation: it’s creamy, long-lasting, delicate, and nearly silky. I taste a very mild combination of flavors including lots of milk chocolate, cooked currants, followed by warming alcohol and fading into a deep and bitter coffee finish that is eventually followed by, of all things, generic beer hop flavor. What the hell? Well, it’s a little better than that: I can distinguish pine and lots of wood that betray a large amount of hops hiding in here for a lengthy, bitter finish. Rather mild, especially for 10%ABV, and frightningly drinkable. Down it goes.
Sammy (3242), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 26, 2008 Black with beige head.Roast in aroma. Coffee but not only that, creamy mouthfeel, richness. Vanilla, cocoa. Even after warmed, not supper complex, but still nutty, boozy.Dry sweetish finish.Sweetness for drinkability, would lie the perfect to be bitter. Nice RIS.
HonkeyBra (517), Lemont, Illinois, USA Nov 26, 2008 Pours dark black with thick tan head. Aroma is chocolatey with notes of coffee. Flavor is truffles, dark chocolates, dark fruits, and roastiness. A tad thin for an imperial stout, but the alcohol is not noticeable at all. Very good, especially when you consider the price malrubius (514), USA Nov 21, 2008 Black with lasting brown head and lace. Bitter dark roasted chocolate earthy woodsy aroma with a hint of baseball glove and soapiness. Deep roasted bitter dark chocolate and espresso with dark fruit and roasty bitter finish. Full body nice mouthfeel, medium carbo. Rich, roasty and complex. Excellent. nhorween (554), New York, New York, USA Nov 21, 2008 22 oz. Black pour with brown around the edges. Scant tan head. Rated this a bit cold... Coffee, vanilla, wood and earth (I’ve been using those two words a lot lately...). Bitter chocolate and fresh hoppy quality. Well balanced flavor, dry chalky finish. Acrid smokiness, but not off putting. Bitter almonds and walnuts with a chewy fatty component. Oily on the palate, tons of small bubbles. jebert (60), Watertown, Wisconsin, USA Nov 20, 2008 Pours ebony balck with huge brown head. Aroma is bootstrap molasses, chocolate, and malt. Mouthfeel is rich thick and creamy. Taste is intense with chocolate, coffee, sherry, molasses, toffee and dark roasted malts assaulting the tastebuds. Finish is well balanced, not bitter, not too sweet. Packs a punch at 10% ABV. Great pairing with red meats including beef, lamb, venison or gyros. Also could be a meal in itself. Hats off to Moylans, you have created a masterpiece of the brewing arts.
