beoir (51), st paul, Minnesota, USA Mar 12, 2008 thanks to Brad. chocolate aroma. strong coffee, alcohol, and chocolate flavors with a slightly bitter finish.
0o9i (262), Reno, Nevada, USA Oct 9, 2008 22oz bottle. Opaque body is topped with a rather large, tan head of creamy texture and leaving behind generous lace. Nose is dominated by earthy musk, but also contains a good dose of roasted malts for coffee and chocolate, dark, tart berries that have been cooked, and undertones of booze. Mouth is fullish with awesome carbonation: it’s creamy, long-lasting, delicate, and nearly silky. I taste a very mild combination of flavors including lots of milk chocolate, cooked currants, followed by warming alcohol and fading into a deep and bitter coffee finish that is eventually followed by, of all things, generic beer hop flavor. What the hell? Well, it’s a little better than that: I can distinguish pine and lots of wood that betray a large amount of hops hiding in here for a lengthy, bitter finish. Rather mild, especially for 10%ABV, and frightningly drinkable. Down it goes. BossHossBikes (127), Tennessee, USA Oct 9, 2008 Bottle. Pours ebony with burgundy edges up against a light. The tan, one-finger, head quickly diminishes. The aroma has lots of chocolate, roasted graham, molasses, tangy dried dark fruits, and a little bit of soy. The flavour is a blast to the palate. Initial flavours include a nice balance of dark chocolate, toffee, and roasted coffee. As the brew flows off the tongue, bitter hops rush in complementing and amplifying the coffee and dark chocolate notes. Toffee and molasses adds a subtle sweetness to the rapidly intensifying bitterness. The finish lightly dry. This is extremely delicious. DTM (399), Winters, California, USA Oct 7, 2008 Bottle from Ledger’s in Berkley, CA. Pours almost black with a medium sized tan head. Tasted of roasted chocolate matls. A great beer to just sip on. Even gets better as it warms. WOW!! BeerBelcher (750), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Oct 7, 2008 I really enjoyed this imperial stout - it offers up a lot of flavors and seemed to reveal more and more with each sip and as it warmed up.
It pours black, with a pretty decently sized head for this style (their heads are usually pretty minimal). Aroma was not great...really just dry roastiness with some coffee notes. However, flavor revealed quite a bit more - coffee, a touch of sour sweetness, "burned pizza crust," and lots of chocolate notes. Mouthfeel was great - dry, smooth, but not overly sticky...still pretty clean.
A top notch beer. I bought this bottle at Discount Liquor. apshah99 (92), Portland, Oregon, USA Oct 5, 2008 Dark brown almost black pour with thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt with alcohol. Tastes of bitter roasted chocolate malt with coffee and lots of smokiness. Excellent mouthfeel.
