Ice Axe IPA is the Mt. Hood Brewing Co.'s flagship and best selling beer. Pale amber in color and aggressively hopped, Ice Axe is a mouth-filling and well balanced beer. Slight buttery overtones provided by oak-conditioning, gives it a character reminiscent of a fine wine. The mild spiciness and rich bitterness of the brewmaster's carefully selected hops shine through in the flavor and aroma. O.G. 1.060/ 5.9% abv./ East Kent Goldings, Mt.Hood, and Willamette hops/ Five different malts.

22oz bottle from PDX. Clear amber with an off white head. Aroma of citrus, caramel and some light floral notes. Flavor is sweet caramel malt with a medium hop bitterness and no alcohol taste. Medium body with average to low carbonation. Decent IPA but a bit on the sweet side, hops not fresh, could be old bottle.

Pen & Paper Log (Aug 2013) c/o a friend returning home from OR Aroma - hops dominate, there is also citrus, and some floral notes Appearance - body is amber, clean liquid, and 1" white head, with some dappled lacing Taste - the bitter is bitter in nature, with a moderate hop and some caramel malt backing it up Palate - body is between light and medium, texture is more thin thank thick, the carbonation is below average, the finish not big on the hop profile. Very forgettable.

Superb hopping gives this a really dynamic bittering presence -- tangy, rich, full of fruit and pine and even a little sour. Long finish, nimble on the palate.

Bottle:   Amber, faint haze, thin to moderate frothy white head, spotty lacing.   Muted wet hop nose, slight overcooked vegetable.   Moderate bitterness on the tongue, mild to moderate sweetness, but also has a big of that overcooked vegetable tinge to it.   For an IPA its not bright, not all that hoppy either.   Seems fouled by age or temperature.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Dull wet/stale hop finish, with that overcooked vegetable profile.   First Mt Hood beer... hope the rest are better.

Pours amber with a medium white head. Aroma is light citrus hops and hints of malt. Flavor is light hops with a malty finish. Not really what you would expect from an ipa.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours a clear orange color with a thin and creamy light beige head that diminishes quickly. Sticky rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrusy hops and toasted malt. Medium body with flavors of grassy hops, citrus and malt. The finish is hoppy with a short bitter aftertaste. Decent overall.

Sampled on a recent northwest trip. Pleasant citrus hopiness, but very mellow smooth/sweet flavor. A hint of dry bitterness in the finish. Copper color with a white head.
