bhensonb (3138), Woodland, California, USA Aug 9, 2008 Draft at the brewpub. Copper color with a good yellow beige head. Light hop aroma. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. Lots of hop bitter over some sweet malt. Not so sticky as some. Light heat down the gullet. Make that not so sticky as many. Leaves nice bitter in the mouth. riversideAK (1757), Shoreline, Washington, USA Jul 8, 2008 Aroma is complex and fruity. Caramel, toffee, softer fruits, oranges, apricots, and a light odd vegetal thing that oddly works. Orange with a big beige head. Sweet and malty with lots of fruit and some floral/citrus hops that provide some balance. Sweet but not cloying. Some alcohol bite, but good and warming in the cold after some solid snowboarding. Angeloregon (2023), Portland, Oregon, USA Jun 17, 2008 On tap at Ice Axe Taproom in Government Camp, OR--Light amber-copper body. Quite light for a barley. Thick whitish head. Fruity malt and hop sweetness. Very nice beer! JoeMcPhee (3899), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Oct 31, 2005 Tap at the Horse Brass. Deep amber colour thin white head. Sweet malty aroma, brown sugar and a bit of mint. Heavy spicy hops, some sweet hoppy fruitiness among all the sweet malts. Flavour is quite sweet up front, caramel, brown sugar and a bit of alcoholic pepper. Hop flavour is a combination of spicy and fruity. Balances quite well with all of the sweet malts and peppery alcohol. Very warming feeling. Very fresh, but still balanced. Would age quite well. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Aug 27, 2005 (Draft: Mt. Hood Brewing Co. in Government Camp, OR) Well, this is my final beer to try at this brewpub, and given that all their other beers were excessively sweet, I’m expecting more of the same. The nose is sweet and fruity, but it’s fairly pleasant aromatically. But wow, tasting this barleywine, this is crazy sweet. It’s like liquid sugar water. It’s also very, very fruity, and the combination is tough to swallow, literally. The moderate bitterness is pretty much handcuffed, unable to cut the sweetness at all. Moderate alcohol presence, but I can’t get past the intense sugary sweetness. That means the palate is totally cloying, and I can’t even finish this taster. Ruddy amber color, fully clear, topped by a small light tan head that quickly fades to a small ring. Ugh, too sweet and sugary!
