Bottle. Chocolate-caramel malt and grapefruit peel aroma. Dark brown with small head. Sweet chocolate fudge malt, light ash, and moderately bitter orange peel flavor. Good body. Not bad.

This beer was a hazy brown with a half inch of white head I can barely smell anything, just a hint of hops Strong taste of burnt malts with lingering bitters as a strong after taste The body is light and flat

Bottle: Deep brown with a small, greyish-tan head. Chocolate, pine aroma. Taste is slightly spicy evergreen...caramel malt, mild pine bitter. A nice, cooling feel to it....very solid in body and flavour.

5000 (6599) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - OCT 6, 2015
Bottle:   Muddy brown, moderate frothy sandy head, nice lacing.   Faint roasted malt nose, soft dark chocolate.   Similar on the tongue.   Roasted malts are fairly pale.   Moderate bitterness.   Seems to be of the citrusy kind.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Finishes more of an IPA versus Black IPA.   Decent, but not "Black" enough in my book.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 12/30/2014. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, light char, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and dark/roasted malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, light char, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good sized pine/citrus rind/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/roasted malt flavors; with a solid bitterness/sweetness balance and minimal cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and resinous/sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a good black IPA. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/roasted malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. The bitterness is a bit rough on the finish, but not unbearable. A nicely enjoyable offering.

12oz bottle from gimmethefunk, thanks Pat. Poured a lighter density black body with a large frothy super light beige head. Aroma of cellar, dusty chocolate, dark cherry skins, cola, dark toast. Body is huge foam, lighter watery mouthfeel and a lingering burnt aftertaste. Flavor is horrible, sort of like burnt bandaids. Meh if this isn’t infected than these are the worst brewers around.

From a bottle, new label looks childish compared to old art-deco label. Pour is deep reddish brown to black with a two finger beige head. Aroma is a little hoppy; not very strong. Taste is hoppy at first, with a malty middle and a slightly bitter finish. Overall texture is fairly thick, as expected for a black IPA. A decent brew for the style.

12 oz bottle. Pours a very deep red brown with a light tan head. Floral, herbal, grassy hops in the aroma with a toasty malt background. Roasty pine herbal flavors. Well made and tasty.
