Classic Irish dry stout tasted from tap. Tanned, creamy, very dense, milky head and near black colour. Looks the same as Guinness Draught and has the same thick creamy mouthfeel, but there is less iron in the aroma and more malty and fruity sweetness in the mouth, more apple- and chocolate-like; finish equally roasted bitter. On the same par as Guinness Draught, but I’d prefer Beamish.

Really enjoy this one. A strong aroma and a taste with a full roasty tange, with a just a hint of chocolate.

Keg at Pleasance Courtyard. Black body with a lasting tan head. Excellent lacing. Aroma of creamy chocolate, earth and ash. Flavour of biscuit and burnt toast. Dry finish. Thick mouthfeel with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. Not bad, but not particularly memorable.

Draught, Engelen, Stockholm. Clear hints of coffee in the aroma. A bit dull, not much ’bite’, even for its type.

Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head.
Nose - a very elusive note of dark chocolate biscuits.
Taste - mainly malt not much chocolate.
Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish.
Overall - decent for a mass distribution beer.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pint on-tap in Gallagher’s Boxty House, Dublin, Ireland (€5):
Roasted notes & earthy malts initially, some creamy notes & lactose coming through alongside some light coffee & touches of bitterness towards the end with a touch of chocolate too.
Dark brown to black with red tinges at the base. Creamy looking & still, thumb-sized head that’s off-white with great retention & good lacing on the sides.
Roasted malts, a touch of coffee & the same chocolate that appeared in the aroma as well. I could detect some sweetness with hints of faint bitterness alongside some biscuit flavours.
Very smooth & goes down very easily from the start. Carbonation was very soft & the beer was quite dry with a faint bitterness that left you wanting to take another drink straight after the last.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one & it definitely grew on me as I worked my way down the glass. Lighter, smoother & less bitter than Guinness, it’s is a good alternative to that one with a solid taste to back it up. Can’t wait to see how it tastes by the can since it’s hard to find on draught in the UK these days.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a pint glass and a mug. There wasn’t much difference between the two glasses.
The appearance was dark brown color ranging close to black. The head was a film of off white foaminess coating the sides of the glass.
The smell had a nice blend of roasty coffee to sweet dark chocolate. There was also a light milk chocolate coming in as it warmed.
The taste was basically balanced between the roasty coffee to sweet chocolates.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was construed to be somewhat sharp but tame enough to take down at a decent pace.
Overall, Irish Dry Stout? Oh yeah. Done well. Oh yeah. Would this guy have it again. Oh yeah!
