COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Murray’s Big Wednesday Summer IPA’s vital statistics are that it is 6.1% ABV with an original gravity of 1061. It is a different kind of IPA to our Icon 2IPA – it is 1.5% lighter in alcohol, and it is a bit paler in colour – a ‘summer’ IPA. It uses a lot less of the richer caramel flavours from Crystal malt than the Icon in its malt bill. It is also unusual in that I used no standard bittering hop addition at all in the brewing process – all the ‘bitterness’ in the beer is coming from the aggressive hop flavour from the late hop additions rather than traditionally ‘measurable’ bitterness from earlier additions to the boil. There is an aggressive hop flavour balanced by a biscuity malt character from the blend of British and German malts. The aroma is an aggressive blend of citrus and spice – almost passionfruit character and the finish is relatively dry for a beer of this ABV. For all this hop flavour the beer just maintains its balance and has great drinkability.

UPDATED: NOV 23, 2012 From a 330ml bottle on 14/11/2012. Pours a slightly cloudy dark golden with a massive five finger head. Has a very floral, fruity aroma similar to their Angry Man. The flavour is also like Angry Man, but after he’s been working out big time. You get lots of passionfruit, citrus fruit and honey, with a touch of yeastiness. The hops are dialed up fairly high to provide a satisfying dry, bitter, slightly spicy finish. My only real complaint is that it’s over carbonated. All up another very nice beer from Murrays, if not quite top flight.

Sipped from the bottle. As soon as the lid came off I spilled this shit all over my favourite pair of pants. Alright settle down, maybe it just traveled badly and is a tad over-carbonated. Nice grapefruit aroma with a caramel malt. Took a sip, what the fuck. If you filled a keg with bubble bath, champagne and bubble wrap and rolled it down Mount-Fucking-Rumbly Tumble it would be less carbonated than this. Cant take one sip without the head foaming up through the neck and spraying me in the face. Murrays, I like your other beer, but this is undrinkable.

Masterfully balanced IPA. Clean, sharp but smooth with good resin and citrus. Strays into a new world style but only just.

330ml bottle from Warners at the Bay Bottle Shop. It’s been a while since I’ve had a beer from Murray’s and I’d forgotten how good they are and this one is no different. It’s a big froth monster when poured into the glass with a big gush of loose foam. It settles to leave a hazy honey coloured beer. Grapefruit and floral aromas and a great flavour.

Med bet golden color. Grapefruit, somewhat medicinal , big hop character . Big hoppy start but then glides into maltiness.

Had at the beer club at Roxbury Hotel Glebe- very nice earthy hop aromas. A good sweet up front taste, with a huge hop bitter taste of the finish. Very good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330mL bottle. Pours slightly cloudy sunset orange/yellow with a massive white head, way over-carbonated. I do get the spicey citrus flavour in this beer but its hard to pick out over the bubbles acting like sherbert on my tongue.

Bubbles. Difficult to taste beer with all that fizzy carbonation. You cannot sip - you are just drinking foam, need to take a large volume in just so you can taste the beer. Nice, but different, bitterness and flavours but elusive. Reminder of flavours with each numerous burp. Did I mention the bubbles?

Standard sort of golden amber colour. Quite pleasant aroma, big on grapefruit and pine. Quite bitter ending with a touch of funkiness. Much bigger flavour than I have come to expect from Murrays. Not bad.

UPDATED: JAN 8, 2013 Bottle from Mane Liquor. Very carbonated when pouring it out. Seems like thats either a common problem with this beer or it has been brewed that way. Produced a large, creamy white head on top of a clear orange body. Nose shows loads of sweet, citric based fruits. A touch of grapefruit. Quite biscuity in the taste with all the citrus and sweetness coming through on the finish. Loads of lemon and grapefruit. Too much carbonation for my liking. Could be oxidised. Ok

My first task after pouring the beer was to eat the head with a spoon, no word of a lie. Of the reviews so far, only one has had the similar experience of pouring an entire glass of foam, so perhaps we just got an overly enthusiastic bottle. With that hurdle overcome, my job became more enjoyable. Unusually for an IPA, the grapefruit aroma is combined with a strong scent of butterscotch. The flavours were similar in the mouth, giving it a unique taste, even if it’s not entirely to my liking. A pleasant experience.
