3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20 Davros (1473) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - NOV 12, 2010
Pours black with a large lasting tan head.
Nose shows lots of chocolate, roasted malt and espresso. Quite sweet.
Flavours include lots more roasted malt and a little dark chocolate. Again, quite sweet, with only a faint roasty bitterness on the finish.
Carbonation is very high (Murray’s seem to do this a lot) .
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 BeerChaser0078 (909) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - NOV 7, 2010
Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a foamy tan head that last’s a short while. Aroma is very roasty, slightly earthy and has woody, nutty notes plus hints of licorice and chocolate. Flavour is quite restrained, almost subtle, and is less roasty with more substantial notes of chocolate and licorice. Light bodied with lots of soft carbonation and a short, dry, mildly bitter finish. Pretty light for a porter, very easy to drink, but by the same token it’s a little nondescript. A decent brew overall.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 hawthorne00 (1852) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - OCT 29, 2010
UPDATED: JUN 14, 2011 Bottle - most appropriate beer I have that I could come at on a warm night for rating 666. Pretty much black with a thick beige head that never quite disappears. Aroma of toast, cola, a little prunes and some charred notes. Taste has moderate amounts of quite dark roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla. Dry grassy finish has a little citrus and roast too. A little overcarbonated to my tastes, but the slight astringency is fine. Gently mouthfilling with subtle depth - I liked this one a lot more than their extra porter. [3.6]
I had another one much like that last night, then tonight from the same four-pack, one with a crackling four inch head that wouldn’t go away. Left with a still overcarbonated beer with some unhappy sourness and no charm. Done with bottled Murray’s awhile. [edit] Left rating the same.
2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Stew41 (1569) - Woodend, AUSTRALIA - OCT 26, 2010
Not bad I guess. Quite light, even for the style. Mild chocolate on the nose points to some sweetness but not evident on the palate. Rather lots of dry, almost astringent roast (tangy?), oaky bitterness and a hardness that is a bit tough going. I do have a slight bias against porters but this is not at all friendly.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 bluevegie (3004) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - OCT 14, 2010
Dark brown body with short head. Roasted and chocolate notes in the aroma, taste is the same along with some light burnt notes, medium body and excellent drinking.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bmeup (469) - Ormeau, AUSTRALIA - OCT 8, 2010
Thoroughly enjoyable dark beer. Roasted flavours as expected. Sweet and bitter character. Very good Oz porter.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 mkel07 (2340) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - SEP 30, 2010
330ml bottle. Deep dark ruby colour with a slight off white head that vanishes in the blink of an eye. Aroma of dark chocolate that is not as strong as I expected and the flavour is well balanced with a mild bittereness and burnt chocolate flavour.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Mjollnir (366) - Canberra, AUSTRALIA - SEP 29, 2010
330mL bottle. Pours clear but very dark red with a lingering small off-white head, some lacing. Malty and roasty aroma, a bit of coffee and caramel. Burnt bitterness in the flavour, a bit of soy or yeast extract. Medium bodied, average carbonation, lingering burnt bitter finish.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 jonno (1994) - JAPAN - JUL 24, 2010
For 4.5 this packs a fair bit of flavour. Straddles the porter stout divide nicely. Qqite chocolatey and roasty with a short bitter finish. Another well made Murrays beer.
