COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Murray’s Heart of Darkness ‘Belgio’ Imperial Stoutis a mix of styles and according to Head Brewer, Shawn Sherlock, “one of a kind”. “This is a big, beautiful beer. A big, dark, beautiful beer. A big, dark, Belgian inspired beautiful beer. And at 9.6% abvit’s made for sipping - perfect for the darkest of winter nights.” Shawn describes Heart of Darkness as an Imperial Stout in basic style but with a stronger accent on the chocolate malt over the roast barley, some rummy, portiness from the dark brown sugar, and underpinning it all, some classic Belgian esters and very light phenolics from the yeast. The beer pours very dark brown/black in colour with dark ruby highlights when held up to the light.

wow a really delicious and surprisingly subtle beer. chocolatey and winey at once, sort of like marsala, plenty of nice leafy but not overly zingy hops supporting a long and dry finish - not a sweet impy at all, but not ridiculously bitter either, subtly phenolic and again marsala-like in aftertaste, with some pleasant toastiness from the wood. not usually a fan of oak aged beers but here it works well. perhaps just lacking in a really knockout aroma to score higher for me.

330 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown colour with a faint white head. Aroma of roastiness, cream and some sourness. Flavour of roasted malts, sour berries, raisins, grass and some mild wooden notes. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. Finishes sweet and warming. Weird.

Dark brown color, small white head. Alcoholic, some toasted maltyness, licorice in the nose. Full-bodied, Quite simple roasted maltyness, lots of alcohol and iron in the flavor. No.

Pours pitch black with a smooth head. Aroma of roastiness, some yeastiness, hints of spices, licorice and dark chocolate. Taste is sweet, leathery and ashy with some yeastiness, licorice and dark chocolate. Finish is malty, leathery and ashy with some roastiness and yeasty notes. Okay.

33 cl bottle @ PBF IX.
Pours dark ruby red, almost black color with a small head. Some cola-like notes on the aroma, caramel and some malts. Sweet caramel malts and soy on the flavor, dark fruits and sugar. Way too sweet and not that pleasant.

Aroma has soy sauce, some licorice and grainy tones. Flavour has some licorice, roasted malts and soy sauce. Also some strong alcohol tones on some sips. Feels rather thin, straightforward and light for an IS.

A cellaring experiment (mid 2011 bottling). Should have tasted on release to get a better means on comparison but I suspect this hasn’t done too much over the past 2.5 years. Quite faithful to the style but the abv is a bit rough, boozy and peaty. Doesn’t make for easy drinking albeit structurally very sound for its age.

Pours pitch black with small tan head that disappears quickly leaving a film on top. Aromas of Belgian yeast, dark fruits, toffee. Interestingly, has aromas more similar to a quad. Taste is pitched somewhere between an imperial stout and a quad - caramel, cherries, plums, raisins, Vegemite, with the more familiar roasted malts and dark chocolate bitterness in the finish. Quite full bodied with a light oily texture. Lots of flavours, if not exactly lots of layers, and not strictly to style but very enjoyable nonetheless. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle shared at my 5K tasting at Bruce’s pad, big thanks for Josh for another OZ tick, 13/11/13. Mid black with a good sized tan head. Nose is roast malt, dark chocolate, light booze, brown sugar, upfront and straightforward for the style. Taste comprises roast malt, molasses, bitter chocolate, dark fruits, muscavado sugars. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, nice roasty tones in the closure. Decent enough impy, lacks depth to be a great but a fairly easy drinking number.

Bottle big thanks to Josh. It pours darkest brown with a small beige head. The nose is pretty sweet, juicy, roasted malt, vanilla, coconut and some tang. The taste is roasted malt, earth, toast, cocoa, vanilla, good bitterness, mild acidity and a bit of spice. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. Rather nice.

Pours very dark and thick, faint aroma of dark chocolate. Strong chocolate and coffee flavours, a drink to be sipped slowly. Love it
