Murray’s Punk Monk carries the classic estery and lightly phenolic Belgian yeast character from the blend of authentic Belgian ale yeasts used. The body of the beer is complex with round biscuity German malt flavours initially filling the mouth before a surprisingly dry, summery finish for a beer of this size. It is this dry finish that keeps it as a summer ale – very moreish and drinkable - but dangerous at 7.5% ABV.

Also marking it as unusual for a Belgian style is its spicy late hop character. The beer isn’t a hop driven style by any means but there is a stronger presence than in most Belgian styles which adds to the overall complexity of the beer.

On tap at The Local Taphouse. Pours a light color, but I can’t tell which one because of the light. Weak nose, but a tasty sweet and light body. Dry finish. Feels well seasonable.

Cloudy gold with very small short lived off-white head. Fantastic aroma - really sweet with belgian candi sugar, bubblegum and dried fruits (pineapple, apricot, papaya), but also a nice earthy/funky yeast note to it as well. Coriander comes through as it warms too. The taste is also sweet but earthy/funky and has a really nice light bitter and dry hop finish which helps avoid any cloying tendencies. Honey, candi, dried fruits, lemon, coriander are all there. Full bodied and oily. Very well balanced, Murray?s have really hit the mark with this one.

Bottle from Cellar Door. Clear dark amber, creamy off-white head, citrusy, funky, doughy, biscuity, spicy, candy sugar, peaches, high bitterness, smooth creamy texture, long dry bitter finish. Amazing!

From a growler from Murray’s. Pours a clear amber, tiny white head, big hop bitter flavours and a citrus aroma. It’s smooth finish makes it definitely sessionable.

Pours with a fairly pillowy white head that settles to about a finger worth, strong yeast and bread in the aroma, has a slight stone fruit and apricot in the nose too, very pleasant. Apricot come through on the taste with a heap of belgian yeast, finishes dry with spicy hops and a atypical lingering bitterness/breadiness. Great carbonation, soft but present. Not my favourite style, but this one is a real winner and a credit to Murray’s as I find Australian brewers belgian styles can tend to be dissappointing.

On tap @ Murray's Brewery Port Stephens, a cracker of a spot. Hazy gold with a frothy head. Good lacing. Some classic Belgian aromas, with lots of yeast, summer fruit and a decent malt background. Similar flavours however there is a refreshing hop end note. Light bodied and an enjoyable version.
