COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Why would our business deliberately produce something that most people won’t like? Isn’t the whole purpose of being in business to sell as much of your products and services as you can to make money? At Murray’s our passion is about our beer. What interests us and a lot of our supporters is pushing the boundaries of what great craft beer can be. Shawn’s fault is an out-there beer! Freestyle brewing at its extreme. If you like big flavours and something a bit different, you’ll love Shawn’s Fault. And if you don’t – then it’s Shawn’s fault! This is not a beer for low-carb, no flavour fans. Inspired by reading about an American craft brewery’s India Black Ale, this is a full flavoured IPA brewed using dark malts. The result is a great blend of big hop flavour and aroma with the strong dark chocolate, almost coffee-like flavours from chocolate and black patent malts used. The naming of this beer is really a joke with no pun intended. And if you really hate the beer, don’t blame Shawn. Blame Murray!

Bottle from mane liquor. Dark brown pour with a small tanned head. Solid lacing left on the glass. Nose is pine dominant with a hint of dark chocolate. Taste is loads of pine and citrus hops. More hints of Choc in the taste. No real roasted malts or coffee tones about it tho. Easy to drink but not as good as a kooinda black ipa or a before the dawn. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2012 Murrays never disappoint, this is another ripper. Coffee, Chocolate, some roasted malts and hops on the nose. Dark chcoclate and coffee at first is tasted but then the hops come in to make it full of flavour but very well balanced whilst being fairly bitter. I was lucky enough to have this on tap at Manly Murrays.

A-- Poured black with a bit of red on the sides of the glass. A mostly mocha colored film, no real head to speak of. Was told that they were almost out of this and were surprised they had any today. S-- Chocolate was predominant but got a bit of the citrus and hop smell. What was there was lemon with tropical fruits. T-- Excellent. Plain and simple. Was hop forward with citrus (lemon and grapefruit) with a bit of pineapple. Followed by a nice chocolate finish. M-- Excellent carbonation. Very well balanced between the malts and the hops. Not over the top like some US IPA’s can be. Very nice beer. O-- Solid as heck black IPA.

A reasonable beer. I like the concept and the fact Murray’s is trying something new. The various flavours were nice, but a little confusing together.

Just on cool and into a snifter. Deepest, darkest brown, opaque with a quickly settling pad of yeasty goodness. Big, towering head of foam, holds up high for the length, daubing thick layers of froth in its wake. Deeply, resinous, sharp and piney, forestfloor hops meets salty caramel on the nose with nuances of tar, tobacco, scorched oak, cherry brandy and burnt, bitter raisins. Begins sweet, candyish and fruity in the mouth. A dry and drawing backend leads to a lovely balance of chunky malts and resinous, earthy hops. Very approachable stuff. Firm body, not too heavy, not too light, moderate carbonation and oily late. Wood, smoke and ash, burnt, bitter raisins and dark stone fruit like the nose, powdery cocoa too, lingers long between each sip. This sample is by no way fresh but the way the malt is not hidden, unlike other Black IPA’s, makes this a very quaffable ale. Another Murray’s gem! (33cL, BB 04/05/12, Cellarbrations Carlisle)

I love this beer. The idea of putting an IPA and and a dark beer, my two favorites styles together was brilliant. A fantastic hop aroma and enriched by the great chocolate and dark malt profile. Easy to drink, which could end up to be dangerous, with the abv of 7.5%. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
