""""Inspired by the great stouts favoured by Russian Imperial Court, Murray’s “Wild Thing” Imperial Stout is a beer fit for a Czar. A massive, intense drinking experience. The colour is black. Totally black. The heart of darkness. Impossible to see through even when held up to the light – nothing insipid about this beer. Aromas of strong dark chocolate, a little fruitiness from the hops and yeast and some rumminess from the alcohol. The flavour is an intense hit of mocha – bitter dark chocolate bordering on coffee. Some malt sweetness but an aggressive hop bitterness and roast grain bite to balance. And then there’s the mouthfeel… Full bodied is an understatement. a magnificent imperial stout in every way, from luscious thick body to creamy dark brown head, deep burnt bitterness and a very classy marsala-tiramisu sort of liqueuryness in aroma and finish. my only caveat is the contribution of the wild yeast - i was hoping for more complex esters and some sourness too but got mainly a faint vegetably note (the way some lambics do) ok perhaps some cherry.

Large hiss when opened, builds up a huge head. The excessive head build up gets boring fast. Initially at least seems to have a very high co2 level. Black color, brown head after it settles to a nice creamy top with loads of lacing. Sweet, hoppy, some wet tobacco scent. Sweet, bitter, dry cocoa taste. Some alcohol aftertaste, also bitter chocolate. Smooth mouthfeel, medium high bitterness.

Not much aroma but a strong coffee/mocha taste. Pours jet black with a thin tan head. I could drink quite a lot of these.

Wow, what a beer. Black as the ace of spades with a rich brown head like boiling toffee. Aroma is a mix of chocolate and plum pudding. Flavour is more of the same, mouthfeel is a slightly oily feel with a mesh of dark chocolate, coffee hints of vegemite and a long bitter finish with some vegetable flavours right at the end. Very little hint of the 10% abv.

Jet black from a 375ml bottle, from IGA Yarra Glen. Earthy hops, caramel and roasty notes, all battle it out for dominance in the aroma. Palate is super rich and smooth. Flavour starts out just like chocolate, then the slightly astringent roastyness comes through, finally the bitterness comes out too play. Overall this beer is great, the high abv is barely noticeable, only present in my ability to type.

Bottle: Thanks Ken: Served in a Chouffe glass. Pitch black, motoroil pour. Medium sized brown foamy head on top of a pitch black colored beer. Looks very good. Aromas of dark chocolate, dark cacoa, coffee, roast, raisin and roasted wood, malts and oatmeal. Flavours of chocolate, mocha, bitter, roast, warmth, coffee, cream, toffee, some spices, dark chocolate, some caramel and chocolate/tar drenched malts and hops. The flavour is so nicely balanced creamy deep dark and a bit strong that it is a bit complex and makes it even better to just enjoy it. Aftertaste is a mix of bitters, roast, chocolate, coffee and some warmth. Low carbo, soft silky mouthfeel, full body and an oily texture. Delicious and balanced beer. Deep, strong, dark and tasty!

Bottle from (I don’t remember). A 2012, maybe even 2011 purchase that I’ve had tucked away. Jet black, oily looking, massive frothy brown head which was unexpected, as was the high level of carbonation. Lots of bitter coffee and licorice/aniseed, dark, sweet chocolate, solid bitterness, both roast malt and hops. An excellent beer only let down by the carbonation issues.

Opaque black colour with a light brown head. Smells of chocolate and coffee. Tastes of chocolate and bitter. Full bodied.

Bottle from King and Godfrey. Pours a dark black/brown with loads of foamy dark brown head. Aroma is coffee, cough medicine, port, plums and some light tropical fruit. Taste is more cough medicine, plum, brandy, with some coffee on the finish and a mild bitterness. Mouth feel is very viscous and sticky. As it heats up, the aroma is slightly more floral and the alcohol burns off a little and the coffee finish intensifies and becomes more smoky. Overall it definitely needs to warm up to become more drinkable. Really enjoyable and complex.
