Sunuvagun! Cottage country Ontar-i-ar-i-o brewing some damn tasties. Huge juicy, floral hops barrel you with a velvety smooth assault, backed solidly by caramel malts, some light grassy and hay notes as well. It lives up to its description and earns its cork. There is even some subtle but present tastes of fresh earth and fallen leaves. Gorgeous colour of reddish gold, off white lacing from the lovely head the whole way down. The perfect balance of oily, chewy textures in a medium bodied, mid carbed ale. Damn Muskoka. Damn.

Bottle. Pours deep amber, very clear, big off white head with moderate retention. Aroma of strong caramel, bread, slight hoppy pine and citrus. Flavor mostly caramel to taste, Stine resinous bittering on the finish.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Appearance: Pours coppery brown colour with about a finger of white head.
Aroma: Hops, caramel
Flavours: Hops, biscuit, cloves and baking spices, caramel
Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated
Overall: A nice beer but not as balanced as in previous years. This year’s version trends towards the hoppy side of things, not that there is anything wrong with that. I just remember previous versions having a really nice malty component that seems lacking from this version.

Small sample from bottle at Camping Ratebeer ’14. Pours hazy amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is a bit herbal with some caramel, malts and some toffee. Taste is also a bit herbal with caramel, maltiness and a medium bitter finish. Medium body and carbo.

2014 vintage, Appearance is great, deep amber-brown colour and a well-formed rocky, lacy head. Feel is kind of oily or creamy at first, but not really big through the middle. The finish is very nice with a burst of bitter dryness at the end. Taste is bitter throughout, but tempered by an initial sweetness and that nice creamy feel. Really quite a good beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
(2013 Vintage Re-reviewed after one year cellaring) Pours a clear medium to deep amber with two fingers of fine tan head diminishing gradually to a thin cap and moderate patchy lacing. Nose is caramel malt, grassy and earthy hops, slight pine. Taste leads out sweet, giving way to herbal and piney hop bitterness. Medium body, medium to light carbonation, and a sticky, bitter finish.
Interesting - I was a bit worried that I had killed this by cellaring it, particularly since there was some fluffy mould on the outside of the cork, but it’s still very drinkable. (I cleaned the mould with vinegar before opening the cork, and cleaned the neck before pouring.) There’s still quite a bit of hop character in the nose and on the tongue, and the aging may have mellowed the pine bitterness somewhat, but all in all, this might be something that one could age for a couple of years, just for fun. Might have to do that with the new vintage. (And yes, the new score is lower than the original - that’s a reflection of my own scoring recalibration, and not of this beer having gone downhill with time.)
