Each year the tempered thaw of Muskoka winter gives rise to new and strange creations. Legends date back to the 1800’s when lumberjacks and fur traders took to the woods and ecnountered the mysterious culture and wildlife in the unknown Northern region. Today, we echo our ancestors’ quest and have unearthed this season’s most distinct offerings. The culmination of these ingredients rests in the LEGENDARY MUSKOKA SPRING ODDITY brew.

We invite you to Release The Legend.

This is a pretty decent ale, though I would’ve have placed it in the Belgian Strong category. Its a bit too sweet for my tastes but the citrus, spice, and floral aftertaste is pleasant. Brandon and Monica bought this one in Toronto and we tried it after the Deschutes Tap Takeover in Lawrence, 2013.

750ml bottle, clear honey gold color, with a small white head, yeasty, ripe apple, pear, fruity, doughy, vanilla spicy nose, with some honeyed pale, munich, toasted malt, herbal, faint elderberry accents, and some light floral citrus leafy hop notes in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice sweet honey, fruity candied orange peel, pear, yeasty, honeyish pale, munich, bread, toasted maltiness, apple strudel dough, elderberry spicy character, with some hebal heather tip, spuce, faint honey lollipop candyish, spicy apple pie, mild spritzy lemon pepper flavours, leading towards a yeasty, spicy fruitiness, doughy, vanilla, lingering orange peel, citrus, leafy, grassy hop bitterness finish.

On tap at Beer Brothers Bistro (Ottawa, ON). Cloudy golden body with a thin off-white foamy/creamy head. Nice malty/hoppy aroma with fruity and yeasty hints. Taste is well balanced. It carries yeasty and flowery notes and ends with a decent bittersweet finish. Enjoyable.

750ml bottle, 2012. Hazy banana yellow/gold, big sticky head. Herbal and piney, plus some sour orange peal, Belgian yeast and a little high end lavender soap in the aroma. Sweet and some tart sour, citrus. All the stuff from the ingredients list is present in the taste. Body is quite smooth and dry, medium to light for the strength. Overall, I enjoyed it quite a lot, but it seemed a little busy. Definitely recommended, though.

I felt initially that this was nothing more than an okay Belgian Strong Ale, which is hardly a bad thing to begin with, in my opinion. But it’s the back end of this beer that really makes it shine. Upfront it is very typical of a golden BSA, reminiscent of Duvel--floral, spices, and light fruits on the nose, and a medium-bodies, fizzy palate. But the end is where the "oddity" gets its name: the mixture of heather tips, juniper berriers, and orange peel shavings really give this beer an extra kick that provides a long finish. Very nice beer.

750ml bottle given as a gift from Sean. Slightly opaque amber with a generous off white somewhat cream head that fades to absolutely nothing (but looks nice at first...and then tranquil at the end). Reminds me a bit of St Bernardus Abt 12 with a nice light spice, some Belgian yeast, a bit of alcohol, banana, light biscuit, some citrus that make it seem quite fresh. Moderate+body, moderate carbonation, somewhat sweet with a nice Belgian yeasty kick, leaves a great taste on the palate that makes you want more. Have to say was blown away by this beer considering my expectations. Might just have to go out and buy a few.

Bottle of the 2013. Hazy golden with a pale head. Aroma is yeast, caramel, a little clove and banana. Slightly slick mouthfeel, sweet on the palate with a touch of subtle bitterness and a little booze on the finish. Taste is caramel, cooked pineapple, blood orange, candied mango.

Pours orange golden and slightly opaque, nice carbonation produces a rocky white head with some lacing. Complex bouquet of aromas including citrus fruits, aniseed, licorice, black pepper, horse blankets and hay. The palate pretty much follows the nose, very complex and you can really tell the belgian yeasts went to work on this one. Finish is moderately dry and quick, with some warm booziness lingering. I might pick up one to cellar for a couple of years.
