Each year the tempered thaw of Muskoka winter gives rise to new and strange creations. Legends date back to the 1800ís when lumberjacks and fur traders took to the woods and ecnountered the mysterious culture and wildlife in the unknown Northern region. Today, we echo our ancestorsí quest and have unearthed this seasonís most distinct offerings. The culmination of these ingredients rests in the LEGENDARY MUSKOKA SPRING ODDITY brew.

We invite you to Release The Legend.

Ingredients: Pure Muskoka Water, Heather Tips, Juniper Berries, Sweet Orange Peel Shavings, North American Malts, Noble Hops, Belgian Yeast and Belgian Candi Sugar.

Renamed Legendary Muskoka Oddity. Ingredients have changed somewhat. Pours a clear dark yellow, almost amber with thin, quickly fading white head. Aroma is Belgian yeast, spice, orange, banana, and sweet candy. First taste is as expected from the aroma. The second sip reveals undertones of spruce and increasingly complex spicy and herbal notes. The finish is yeasty, spicy, slight bitterness coming through the sweetness and long. The body is medium with light but pleasant carbonation. Overall, quite tasty. I must also say that this yearís is in my opinion better than last year.

Bottle pour slight turbid yellow. Nose saison like clove, spice and ester. Taste of the same, with more pepper, bite from the hop, then spicy finish.

The first aroma is typical Belgian strong, with that spicy, orangey tinge. Then the second bit comes in like the ribbon candy my grandmother always had, stuck together in the jar in her living room. Then maybe thereís banana, but mild. To look at, itís a nice deep yellow, well carbonated but little head. Nice lacing. Taste is interesting. At first Iím a little disappointed because I was expected a bigger punch, but the punch is in the drawn out aftertaste where the alcohol really hits you. Taste it primarily sweet, but the bitterness mixes with the alcohol in the long aftertaste. Man, that is good. I want to keep tasting it faster, but I have a big bottle left to go.

A flavored ale. One of the best ones I had last summer. Brewed in Ontario and not what I was expecting from the region. Has a ton of great flavor, what I notice most are the juniper berries. Fairly light for an ale. Good head. Loved it, one of my personal favorites.

I gotta admit Iím a sucker for large wine-style beer bottles with high alcohol percentages printed on the side. Gotta get these in before I head back up to the dry north, itís always binge and purge when youíre up there I tells ya. This is also a 2013 vintage ifín indeed that matters. This pours with a nice foggy orange body with no bubbling, and a solid yellow-white head. Very appealing so far! The aroma is barnyard funk and orange peels with just a hint of sugariness. The flavour is like a belgian strong ale infused with grass, a good mix of the heavy stuff with some earthy notes. A little cloying and sweet on the palate however. This is an interesting and eclectic beer, hints of North American ingredients in what seems to be a Belgian style ale. Itís highly drinkable nonetheless.

Keg at Kick Off, Waterloo, Ontario, 28th April 2013. This is a quite a tasty beer, definitely some Belgian yeast notes to this, a little citrus. Too fizzy for more palate, OK

This is a pretty decent ale, though I wouldíve have placed it in the Belgian Strong category. Its a bit too sweet for my tastes but the citrus, spice, and floral aftertaste is pleasant. Brandon and Monica bought this one in Toronto and we tried it after the Deschutes Tap Takeover in Lawrence, 2013.

750ml bottle, clear honey gold color, with a small white head, yeasty, ripe apple, pear, fruity, doughy, vanilla spicy nose, with some honeyed pale, munich, toasted malt, herbal, faint elderberry accents, and some light floral citrus leafy hop notes in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice sweet honey, fruity candied orange peel, pear, yeasty, honeyish pale, munich, bread, toasted maltiness, apple strudel dough, elderberry spicy character, with some hebal heather tip, spuce, faint honey lollipop candyish, spicy apple pie, mild spritzy lemon pepper flavours, leading towards a yeasty, spicy fruitiness, doughy, vanilla, lingering orange peel, citrus, leafy, grassy hop bitterness finish.

On tap at Beer Brothers Bistro (Ottawa, ON). Cloudy golden body with a thin off-white foamy/creamy head. Nice malty/hoppy aroma with fruity and yeasty hints. Taste is well balanced. It carries yeasty and flowery notes and ends with a decent bittersweet finish. Enjoyable.
